there was a 'scare' a couple months ago where the cast was holding out for more money and it looked possible the "we'll stop making the show when it stops being profitable" promise could come to pass, but then they signed new contracts

every time I've tried to watch a new Simpsons episode it has been excruciating. there are always funny moments, but very little subtlety or wit. they almost seem like they're aping the very shows that ripped them off now.
fwiw I didn't like the movie either.

You can't even call anything after Season 11, let alone what's going on now "The Simpsons." I take cue from the blog Dead Homer Society and can only call it "Zombie Simpsons": It died long, long ago, but keeps going on undead...

I saw part of an episode on a plane this week. Homer sold a few filler lines but I can hear jokes about Christian Charity being a porn star name anywhere (SNL basically did the same bit on its xmas show) and that was as good as it got. If it's not as offensively bad as it seemed a few years ago, it might be because I'm desensitized to it being mediocre.

i thought the movie was alright in terms of narrative, the characters being more or less who they should be, all those things that have mostly fallen apart in the last ten years. where it mostly failed for me was in not being very funny. recent seasons, i've no idea what the most recent episode i saw was. i stopped buying the dvds at season 10. when in hmv the other week i had a slight urge to buy season 11, but looking at the episode list, ayayay, i can't have that soiling my collection.

i love this & think it's p much otm, & i kinda remember that south park getting good was the result of them embracing the sort of roaming-eye-around-the-village thing in which we dipped into weird strands of suburban life, rather than just played with the kids. but i think the thing that it requires is just originality & good writing, rather than reliance on guest stars & absurd premises - shit like the reclaiming-the-lemon-tree-from-shelbyville ep was a great exploration of a weird story in the daily life of a small town, & they don't do that anymore, they always end up on safari or in japan or swapping jobs with steve martin or w/e (tbh even this is lazy crit based on what it was like five years ago, i can't imagine where it's stooped to now)

feel like "characters team up to go retrieve the city's beloved lemon tree from a neighbouring town" testifies to the onetime originality of the show though; routinely introducing others is fine but i feel like part of what makes the early eps so good is their scale & the fact that it is v 'texture of family life' orientated, about someone getting a new substitute teacher or remembering something or having whatever small disagreement w/a neighbour, stuff that's just a conceit to map amusing 'workings of a family' dialogue onto

i bet there are lots of young writers working on the show now who grew up with it and are trying very hard to do their best and honor the show's legacy, which makes it all the more tragic. stuff like that makes me think of what a terrible thing it could be to collaborate with your heroes or be part of something that big.

a season long simpsons arc that had none of the 4 family members (maggie is still aiight in my book) would be the best thing ever imo. (if it had decent writers, none of the people currently involved in the simpsons and didn't suck.) have smithers uncover shady dealings at the plant, try to get wiggum and quimby involved, some funny stuff involving lenny and carl, as it all comes to a head, burns suddenly has a heart attack/maggie shoots him, turns out disco stu was walter white all along etc.

pulled a d33j and skimmed the thread. resume.
who cares if it's """prime time"""" a show either exists or it doesn't. cartoons generally aren't to begin w/ cause they're cartoons.
― iatee, Saturday, 31 December 2011 15:54 (twelve years ago) link
I do think that Adult Swim got oversaturated with extremely mediocre adult cartoons with retarded bizarre concepts over the last 5 years, but that's as obvious a point as saying 13 year old kids like pictures of boobs.

I was thinking about the 'what if ilx takes over the simpsons' concept upthread and I realized that it would prob just turn into an adult swim show

I saw one episode of Bobs Burgers. I liked it, but I'm not sure how much of that aws due to the fact that I want to make love to H Jon Benjamin's voice

yeah but primetime cartoons on big networks have to aim for ~mainstreamer~ tastes which means they have to walk a thin line cause your mom has to like them too. overall it's prob easier to make a good cartoon show than ever.

Ive seen about four minutes and it was pretty much like 90% gay jokes. And at least two Hispanic people where it was clear a white person was doing the voice

JONAH HILL DONE IT AGAIN
Agree with poster way above, it'd be great to see utterly bizarre and experimental Simpsons. i feel like the characters and storylines are so well known that you don't even need jokes for weird narrative episodes to be funny. Good use of the existing capital.
Of course nothing like that would ever happen, unless whoever has control over the creative direction totally loses his/her mind.

yeah, that jumped to mind when i wrote that. I'd love to see, say, an episode where Milhouse falls in love with Bart and the entire thing is like some uber sentimental after-school special. No jokes, just really uncomfortable emotions and out-of-step seriousness. i'd find that funny, at least.
― Benjamin K. Blandon, Saturday, 31 December 2011 20:50 (twelve years ago) link
wtf was that
― judith, Saturday, 31 December 2011 20:53 (twelve years ago) link
i want to see an episode where Milhouse and Bart are wrestling, put each other in sleeper holds, and both pass out, and lie on the ground motionless for the next 18 minutes

whiney so otm re: archer
― Matt Armstrong, Saturday, 31 December 2011 21:42 (twelve years ago) link
yeah absolutely, IMO Archer is kinda in the same realm as stuff like Family Guy where the jokes come so fast and are spoken so confidently that you kind of feel like it just has to be funnier than it actually is
the only animation that really impressed me lately was some weird Adult Swim show called SuperJail (or something like that) that I caught while flipping through channels - I don't know if it was funny per se but the animation was really something

also that "bart the general" clip is really amazing, everyone should be watching this
like all that dumb "Dead Bart" creepypasta stuff was pretty annoying but it did strike me how cool it would be if they really did make an episode that was totally surreal and uncomfortable to watch. South Park kinda crossed this line with the "You're Getting Old" episode but I'd love it if they just once did something totally inexplicable

hey there was one episode on the other day where it was in the future and they were all the age they were supposed to be and and homer wasn't a drunk and maggie was a rock star. it was kind of cool. it could be almost ten years old though as far as know.
