I want a suit so so bad but I know like nothing abt suits so I thought we could talk about them. I want something that is v stylish and slim and smartly cut like this suit right here:

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7UJsv6aEdc0

But I don't want to spend more than $300ish. What should I do? I've heard you can find decent stuff at H&M, Uniqlo, and w/ Macy's Alfani line. Does anyone have experience with Indochino? They seem like too good to be true (a custom suit w/ free shipping and alterations for $379 wtf). Anyway so yes, suits!! So wonderful!

I've heard good things about indochino but I've never used 'em

I also have a suit question: does anybody know what I should be looking for in a suit if I want one that's particularly durable? I've thrashed the hell out of Jos a Banks stuff and I've only had them for a couple years.

you probably want one made out of heavier weight wool?

is stuff like Jos a Banks and Men's Wearhouse even worth checking out? I feel like they'd all be boxy and unshapely and dad-like.

I've also been told to look for separates but tbh I just wanna get one thing all together.

Also where can I get a brown tweed three-piece? Should I look at vintage/thrifty places?

Stevie :-D, Friday, 16 December 2011 22:48 (twelve years ago) link

mens suits can be surprisingly hard to come by w/vintage ime - i think they tend to get broken up by the pickers before they even get to the store and i also just dont think theres a huge mrkt for them in the first place

i saw a fairly nice looking suit at h&m this week when i was xmas shopping but i looked at it online and its p cheaply made, if stylish. its a charcol wool/poly one button suit with satin detailing. i think w/uniqlo and h&m yr not really getting a 'bargain' its just fair price for the materials and the craftsmanship. actually (actually) it looks like you can get much better quality suits on ebay used for under $150 theres a dark gray pinstripe hickey freeman suit on there now for just under $100

H&M is definitely not a bargain but Uniqlo imo is pretty well-made (and they also do free tailoring on-the-spot, though it's by their employees so idk). Also I have a hard time w/ buying clothes-type things online because fit is so variable for me.

Stevie :-D, Friday, 16 December 2011 23:28 (twelve years ago) link

uniqlo tailoring is just hemming aint it? well I guess it depends on what kind of employee they hire

I found a three piece suit in a thrift store in south philly once

Spent a whole day looking at what felt like every men's suit in town a few weeks ago. Picked up a great one in Macys for like $300. There is literally only one range in the department stores that does 'true' slim fit for men that are both above average height yet slim - we tried several stores and even in Bloomingdales they recommended the Macy's own brand one (Bar III).
But if you don't need it to be that slim then still worth checking out Macy's, you can get a good price iirc.

Would avoid H&M and the like.
Ted Baker is great for slightly quirkier ones but they're not so cheap, but sales are usually p. decent (got another one there, or was it trousers and a blazer? I have no idea what the difference is).

guys you haveta spend more than $300 but a quality suit is worth it and will last

higgs boson (the deli llama), Saturday, 17 December 2011 12:36 (twelve years ago) link

Well I'm not going to wear it v often, and also like I can't even afford to spend $100 on a suit right now so $300 is a p big stretch and anything beyond that is completely not justifiable at this point in my life.

Stevie :-D, Saturday, 17 December 2011 12:55 (twelve years ago) link

stevie when I'm home in a week I'll look at the suits I got from a thrift store this one time and if I can't wear 'em anymore you're welcome to have one or maybe more!

Whoa, that's mighty generous! How long will you be home??

Maybe try for a vintage three piece on e-bay, then spend the majority of $$$ getting it tailored? A good tailor can work serious miracles. I mean they can basically rework a suit from scratch for a custom fit--pricey but better than spending the same money on a dad suit.

Oh quincie I was gonna ask if mr. Quincie looked at Indochino at all? It looks like they've got a few 3-pieces for sale!

Stevie :-D, Sunday, 18 December 2011 17:48 (twelve years ago) link

it's so, SO weird to visit websites right now and get a bunch of Indochina ads on the side, just because my browser knows I was looking at this thread. i've seen multiple indochina ads over the past day or two, after never seeing one before in my life.

Z S, Sunday, 18 December 2011 20:31 (twelve years ago) link

otm, even moreso if you have no idea what is up with that guy, he looks like jimmy barrett.
(& stevie d otm re: suit budgeting; i so seldom wear one that it could hold up for years just through lack of use)

Never translate German (schlump), Sunday, 18 December 2011 20:37 (twelve years ago) link

He has not checked out Indochino, but I will correct that! You know how he said he "always pictured getting married in a three-piece suit?" He did! It is Hugo Boss and was pretty $$$, but he looked absolutely fantastic and has already gotten a couple of wears out of it (as I have with my red wedding dress). The suit is nice and trim--not big and boxy--grey with a a bit of burgundy uh windowpane or whatever you call it.

quincie, Sunday, 18 December 2011 22:05 (twelve years ago) link

Omg I demand photos. Are there any on the faceypages?

Stevie :-D, Sunday, 18 December 2011 22:06 (twelve years ago) link

I believe there are some on the mister's. Three piece is just so CLASSY! You gotta do it, a three piece is PERFECT for you!
