Thom Yorke, inspiring unattractive dudes with lazy eyes since 1992

milo z, Tuesday, 13 December 2011 17:05 (twelve years ago) link

If you ignore the ptosis (which is, actually, let's face it, kinda sexy sometimes?) and the regretable haircuts and the fact that he's five foot nothing in his socks, he's actually got remarkably good bone structure.

http://userserve-ak.last.fm/serve/_/3298507/Thom+Yorke+thom1988.jpg

But if anything, that's got to be an inspiration to unfortunately follicled dudes that this odd-looking little man can still be lusted after by thousands of women around the world?

Why is it more legitimate to post up enormous pictures of tits than to post up pictures of a scrawny dude in shorts? If you wanted it to be WS: females only, then you should have put that in the thread title.

The chair is probably the most smashable thing posted so far, in my opinion.

So, y'know, read

Mr Jimmy Mod, Thursday, 15 December 2011 11:07 (twelve years ago) link

Jimmy, I got no beef with you. I appreciate the clarification.

But, y'know, there were another couple dozen posts that I decided to respond to - not nastily, but with humour. Hence the jokes about "Vince Clarke" referencing the funnies above.

This is something that this thread has brought sharply to my attention - how differently people read my intentions from my actions. Like, when I'm being exhuberantly gleeful some people read it as trolling, (except emil.y who knows me IRL enough to know that I'm being genuinely joyfully enthusiastic) When I'm being playful like I was being to jaymc, do people read that as nasty?

I dunno. It's *interesting* to me, to note differences and patterns. There's a ton of stuff that, like, talking to Hoy and Milo and Mookie on this thread has made me think about WRT attraction. But it's really kind of a bummer knowing that people are going to get defensive the moment gender even gets mentioned, and therefore get aggro towards me. Which is no fun for anyone. Because I thought this thread was just happy fun lusting and crushing, you know?

I can't even imagine speaking to them, let alone any kind of sexual interaction, it would just be too distracting. I enjoy looking at perfection, but I'm not actually ~attracted~ to perfection.

I don't know if this is because, literally, it is the flaws that make someone beautiful as opposed to merely pretty, to me - or if it's a question of expectations. As a person who is not actually that conventionally attractive to start with, the kind of people that I have got involved with tend towards the "clever but quite odd looking" in the way of TY and RDJ so maybe I've been conditioned to fancy clever but slightly odd looking men bcuz that is where my sexing has usually come from? (Or the other way around, that I expect men with TY or RDJ type looks as opposed to male model looks are more likely to settle for me?) But this gets into that weird thing about looks-based expectations that causes arguments and angst on the OKC thread and the Gurl thread so I'm just going to look at the pretty male models. Pretty.

This thread and others like it are just perpetual Sociological Images 101 in terms of the *presentation* of female sexual attractiveness vs male sexual attractiveness.

Genuinely not criticising any individuals on this thread, but just find it really strange and perplexing. Can anyone find me the equivalent of heartthrob dudes, straddling bicycles in their skivvies? I mean, seriously, not that "man pin-ups" calendar thing. Even heartthrobs I don't find attractive, but maybe people like Mark Ruffalo or Ryan Gosling that the ladies of ILX find attractive? I am just wondering what the equivalent is, and how they are represented.

Stating again for the record, I'm not trolling and apologies in advance if I offend any men with this line of questioning, I am just interested in this. The presentation of heartthrob men in their underwear. What's it look like?

Well, share! x-post

The closest I can think of is...

I have an academic friend who every year gets shipped in a "men of the French Rugby team" calendar which portrays sportsmen in a very "beautiful boys" kind of way, strategically naked, romping with horses and sports equipment - but it is photographed in a very "homoerotic" gaze - i.e. we have endless arguments about whether it's designed for women or gay men.

When I get out of this meeting I'll try and find some photos she's posted of it.

Great example, horseshoe!

You posted a picture of a man with his legs spread, biting his shirt as he reveals his abdomen.

Matt Armstrong, Friday, 16 December 2011 11:32 (twelve years ago) link

Indeed, an androgynous boy/man but still a man

Derek Pringles (Deep in the Tony Hart land), Friday, 16 December 2011 11:36 (twelve years ago) link

Think Deems is on to something - is this visual vocabulary derived from "lads mag" poses (legs akimbo in knickers)? Is there a different vocabulary for "what" "women" "want" or is it just the same thing transposed?

Revealing the abdomen is definitely a ~thing~ - not just for me, but loads of women...

http://userserve-ak.last.fm/serve/_/2388946/Thom+Yorke+ombligooo.jpg

^^^^^^total WS and also used as the splash image for lots of female oriented fan sites so this is not just a *me* thing, don't know if it's "look at my sixpack I am fit" or if it's "I am revealing my vulnerable areas"

The biting the shirt thing also appears to be a ~thing~ - it's not just Ryan Gosling (though, W not S) thing, but it's a repeated thing in the vocabulary of presentation of objects of female desire, but I think that's a universal thing, because oral pleasure is definitely a thing for all genders - whether it's ladies licking ice cream or men chewing at their clothing with desire.

http://4.bp.blogspot.com/_Kozz3X37AII/TGWiIN-0wWI/AAAAAAAABSs/lZ0_IMOrV08/s1600/1139583810_DAlessiaRyanGosling.jpg

I don't think that Andrej Peljic is a good example for anything because he's one of those people whose entire career is based on shaking up or transposing or dismantling the visual vocabulary of gender and Style but here he is with very female styled presenation, yet that "here is my abdomen" of male sexual presentation. Which I find fascinating.

http://userserve-ak.last.fm/serve/500/28433819/Thom+Yorke++Sunglasses.jpg

There's more recent ones, too, but I can't be arsed to dig through 40,000 fan sites to find them right now.

Do wonder how much of Ryan Gosling's appeal is down to *his* persistent abdomen exposing. Watching fan dialogue about him, it's not even the abdomen but those ~lines~ that extend from hip to groin. Which seem to drive many women (OK, Jezebel commenters and ladies in my tweetstream) into a froth of sexual excitation.

Tuomas, never change.

Yeah, there are two threads devoted to her on ILX: one on ILE and another on ILM. (She's also a singer.)

She's probably best known for the movies (500) Days of Summer and Elf, although now she is the star of a popular US sitcom, too.

jaymc, Friday, 16 December 2011 14:40 (twelve years ago) link

At this point you'd posted two pictures of Thom Yorke just in shorts and Andrej Pejic showing off his chest and with his legs spread. Just sayin'.

Ok and then after reading this rest of the thread I see that had been pointed out many times.

big popppa hoy, Friday, 16 December 2011 14:55 (twelve years ago) link

I've already been told several times to lay off this thread of conversation, but my point was: these kinds of images (all images of Pejic, images of Yorke in shorts) are very much the exception in the portrayal of men in popular culture (with seemingly only very specific areas where men are portrayed in those ways: boybands and beefcake actors aimed at women, and also sports figures) but they are much more common in the portrayal of women, regardless of the setting.

I have to search through quite a lot more images, and often much more deliberately, to find a picture of Thom Yorke portraying him in that kind of way, than if I type "zooey deschanel" into GIS and they come up in the first row. Why is it so much harder for me to find what I want to see?

It's a numbers game and it's about expectations. I just find it weird, OK?

Polemicist Who Slashed All, Freely (Fotherington Thomas), Friday, 16 December 2011 14:59 (twelve years ago) link

Ummm the fact that Zooey D and Thom Yorke come from totally different spectrums of pop culture might have something to do with it. Zooey D should be compared to someone like Jake Gyllanhal or Gosling, who always be showing themselves off as popular young actors are likely to do. Whereas the equiv to Yorke or Aphex is... PJ Harvey or someone? And she hasn't been seen dressed more like this today-

Kind of all over the place - male actors are expected to be ripped these days to an absurd degree, even comedic guys like Stanley Tucci and Joel McHale. Young male actors are constantly photographed shirtless.

That Ari Graynor shoot I posted is actually less an example of how starlets are sexualized than most - she's portrayed more in the vein of 'it's so hot when my girlfriend lounges around in one of my shirts' and she's stunningly hot but not in a rail-thin model way. Curvy is too often damning with faint praise (or used to describe model-thin women with big boobs), but she legit is.

xxxp - I don't see how any of those are akin to neologisms that are designed to make cultural prejudices against being perceived as feminine or gay okay (manbags, etc.). Actress? I don't know how that can conceivably be offensive.

milo z, Friday, 16 December 2011 17:30 (twelve years ago) link

Goole, I don't think these terms actually do originate from "the same place." Or at least, not in the same way?

Because I think that the "lady X" and "-ess" terms come from a place of diminishing and othering women because we can't have or be the ~real~ thing.

While the "Man-" terms - perhaps they come from a marketing perspective? But I guess that is the same place, because the whole reason that men have to have a ~special~ Man-thing rather than just a thing (associated with women) is because the association with ~women~ and ~what women do~ is considered so awful and icky that a dude who wouldn't be caught dead carrying a handbag feels OK carrying a Manbag?

But then that's all that "marketing of masculinity" stuff which comes from the same place of OMG gender panic, so if that's what you mean by "coming from the same place" then yes they are.

Anyway, I really think that someone needs to post a picture of an attractive person quite soon because this is quite a derail. I'm not allowed to post any more Thoms so Pyth or CO, do you have anyone to add?

There is an intrinsic judgement in mansplain, manbag, etc. (that can be sexist against women - or against men) that does not exist in "actress" or "lady doctor." Lady doctor or female musician can be diminutive, but that derives from the context of whatever else is said ('female musicians can only be bass players' or w/e) - identification by gender is not inherently judgemental.

milo z, Friday, 16 December 2011 17:51 (twelve years ago) link

ie the disagreement is extremely narrow - the problematic nature of and how easily gender identification can be diminutive and sexist (lady doctor, male nurse) is undoubtedly true and certainly worth talking about, but you can't raise them as exact analogies to new neologisms that carry prejudices built into the word itself.

No one is asking for 30 years of research - you made an argument and are unwilling to discuss it in any way. You can't demand that I agree with you because you say so.

I think "lady doctor" carries a prejudice (as well as male nurse) built into itself: the whole idea behind adding the lady prefix is that woman being a doctor is an exception from the male norm.

Tuomas, Friday, 16 December 2011 18:18 (twelve years ago) link

Derek Pringles (Deep in the Tony Hart land), Friday, 16 December 2011 18:21 (twelve years ago) link

That can very easily be so - but it can also be innocuous. It is possible to use that language solely as a gender identifier, without malice or negativity. Maybe only a small percentage of time, and maybe even problematic in ways then, if you think that gender should be eliminated from conversation.
But there aren't innocuous uses of manbag or bromance that can be separated from the feminine/gay-panic angle - they're built into the words themselves.

Like I said, FT's reaction surprised me because my reading is that it's 95% agreement, aside from the analogy she drew.

milo z, Friday, 16 December 2011 18:24 (twelve years ago) link

It is possible to use that language solely as a gender identifier, without malice or negativity.

Maybe, yeah, but in this case there's no commonly used male equivalent to "lady doctor" or "female musician". If only one gender needs the identifier (because it's assumed to be an exception from the norm), then there's inherent prejudice in choosing to use those terms instead of just "doctor" or "musician".

Tuomas, Friday, 16 December 2011 18:29 (twelve years ago) link

It might be possible for you to use it that way, milo, but it's not possible for some people to hear it that way, and in the case of things that have a history of being derogatory or limiting, the burden falls on the speaker to be clear if possible, or at least to accept someone else's objections reasonably graciously.

OH GNUS (Pyth), Friday, 16 December 2011 18:31 (twelve years ago) link

Milo, it is this idea that I have some moral ~obligation~ to go on at length and explain an argument for which I have already drawn out my basic position and told you a place where you can find 30 years of discussion on that very thing that you brought up, if you're interested in learning even more about it.

Instead of me, like, spending my entire afternoon having this conversation for the 8 millionth time - when really I should be finishing up my reports and preparing for a trip to Cornwall in like 10 hours time that I haven't even started packing for!

And that's not even mentioning how you demand my time and my attention and my discussion at length - then it's not you, but *me* that gets all the snide zings and the eye-rolling from people who reduce me to "omg that person who goes on about womens studies all the time!" and complain about the length of the discussion.

But, you know, you can claim the moral high ground about how I surrendered the argument because I chose to go and pack for Cornwall instead of talking to you. The last word! You can have it! All yours. Enjoy.

Also and this is the same point as an essay I read last week about rape jokes: that when you use words that you think it's time to de-nuance or "reclaim" even though you're not the recipient of them, or whatever, you can't help if some of your listeners HAVEN'T thought about it as much as you have, and you may be reinforcing their belief that the terms or ideas you're using are acceptable on their face.

OH GNUS (Pyth), Friday, 16 December 2011 18:35 (twelve years ago) link

Pyth, please shout at me, if you catch me on this thread again, instead of packing for Cornwall. The reports are now done and I'm going home. I'm sure I've forgotten something important.

there's no commonly used male equivalent to "lady doctor" or "female musician".

I don't know about that, you have male nurse, or male childminder for example. Like the female equivalent they're necessarily meant in a demeaning way, but culture often gets in the way of them being neutral terms.

Anyway, shouldn't really be in a WS thread, my lady spouse (do you see?) will not be pleased, but whoever Ari Graynor is, I would most certainly consider WS with anyone elses, and blonde hair isn't usually my thing.

No, what I meant is that there is no commonly used prefix for a male doctor or male musician, because those professions are thought to be male by default, hence you can just say "doctor" or "musician". "Male nurse" is an example of the same thing, when a profession is considered female by default.

Tuomas, Monday, 19 December 2011 08:30 (twelve years ago) link

The use of "lady doctor" has faded considerably, now that women are not only going to med school in greater numbers, but are often choosing to serve in the less glamorous roles of family medicine and pediatrics, so they are often one's main doctor. As for "female musician", I have never encountered it. Not once. And I don't seem to be a carrier for the idea that musicians are male by default. Composers and conductors, otoh...

"Male nurse" is still going strong, although they are less of a rarity now.

I gotta admit, approaching the 2012 I was thinking that I'd find the ws threads more creepy, and the "hold on I'm spoogin here!"-style comments kind of give that feel, but overall the beauty of the pictures on this thread break that barrier for me.

I still think the level of creepiness is like this though:
Posting picture of smashable person you're attracted to - mildy creepy
Making color commentary -- a bit creepy there, depends on wording

Pyth OTM, that Jang Dong Gun doing a shirtpull thing is v v attractive.

Jesse! That beautiful man with the BELLY is my Secondary Boyfriend, Mr Thomas Yorke. Can you not tell from the terrible, terrible dancing?

I have been trying for years to find a photo of the BELLY of my Number One Boyfriend, Mr Richard D James but this the closest I have ever got. He is not much of an abdomen-exposer.

(I thought at first he had no hair on his belly, then realised that the hair on his belly is the same ginger colour as on his arms and head and got v v v excited.

Oh wow. I didn't recognize him. No offense, but I don't find him attractive. But I do love his belly, so that's good.
