Hung out with n/a and other ChiLXors whose screennames I don't remember. Vegetarian and (yet) DELICIOUS. Highlights= Sarah's oatmeal chocolate chip cookies and Jenny's squash with stuffing.

Thanksgiving was just me, wife, parents, brother and in-laws = dry like overcooked turkey.

After dinner we saw For Your Consideration which was surprisingly good.

Friday night we went to a crazy Morroccan Jewish party in the suburbs. Fun.

A-Ron Hubbard, Monday, 27 November 2006 04:47 (seventeen years ago) link

Very good all around, and now I am tired. But there is work tomorrow, bleah.

Concluded the holiday today with a Piccadilly's dinner with my grandmother.

Hey, Rock Hardy. Are you any kin to the former mayor of Memphis? I drove on your street today.

Great fun, ate too much, and then fell asleep on the couch (perhaps partially due to my mother's choice of an "easy listening" satellite station). Had a second Thanksgiving with friends yesterday, also great.

Back to school and real life (whatever that is) tomorrow.

i spent it hung over :-(

food was good though!

latebloomer, Monday, 27 November 2006 05:04 (seventeen years ago) link

The food/wine was good on Thursday, but some family members made the company not fun, so a D- overall. Today however, at the post-Thanksgiving collapse with various ilxors popping in and out or our new place and SNOW! outside, it was great fun and I'm going in late to the office tomorrow and that makes things even better (A- for today only because I am still coughing and that is now beyond annoying).

Not the best Thanksgiving I've ever had. Never had much of a problem with holiday blues before this year, and I HATE IT.

Pleasant Plains, apparently I'm distantly related to Boss Crump. The North Alabama Crumps split off in the 1830s or so into various branches, one of which produced The Man himself. (Also the town of Crump, Tennessee. I have a picture of me and my daughter standing in front of the "Welcome to Crump" sign.) From what I've read, Boss Crump's political machine rivalled Tammany Hall in complete political control of a city.

I Am Curious (George) (Slight Return) (Rock Hardy), Monday, 27 November 2006 15:07 (seventeen years ago) link

The eating was fantastic. We ate at like 1 and I ended up going home and getting a bizarre wave of energy and cleaned house and invited people over and had one of those band-practice-in-front-of-people at-home-gig/party dealies. Good times.

This was only possible though because the boy spent the weekend with his mom, and, all crazy weekend antics aside, it was a very bummed-out weekend. My parents took me to see For Your Consideration to cheer me up, and it almost worked.

nklshs (nklshs), Monday, 27 November 2006 15:12 (seventeen years ago) link

After having to cancel our plans last minute, we ended up at a huge feast with friends and everything imaginable (or desirable) on the table. Our clothes smelled of smoked turkey the next day. An after-meal Campari topped it off perfectly.

sis & bro-in-law never turn the fucking TV off.

I had to watch the Madonna concert special upstairs, though. (Mom still refers to La Ciccone as "that pig.")

Grandpa Noise, Monday, 27 November 2006 20:15 (seventeen years ago) link

Oh yeah, since when is the Macy's Thanksgiving Parade coverage focused on every god damn thing possible besides the actual parade? I was trying to get my boy interested in one of my own childhood favorites, and instead it was a bunch of uninteresting musical performances that weren't even on floats.

took an early ferry and drove from woods hole to my parents outside of saratoga springs. spent the night there and then we all headed to brattleboro, vermont to my cousin sarah's house where 40 various family members were. ate lots and lots and lots and stayed over in hotel. then we drove to maria's dad's house *http://www.ninemtn.com/* and that was fun and deborah promised rufus that she would keep her snake away from him and there was a baby named olin there and my best friend maggie showed up as well and we had yet another thanksgiving dinner with all the trimmings and lots and lots of pie and the next morning we drove to hudson new york to see my brother but he wasn't there even though his store was open for some reason and we waited for him but it was getting late so i stole some records and then we headed to willow new york outside of woodstock on top of a mountain and saw maria's sister and her husband andy and her dad came and her other siblings and we had an early birthday party for rufus and he got lots of stuff and andy made a goose (and fresh still-warm gooseliver pate for you carnivores on bread that maria's sister made) and we drank and ate lots of pie all night and had a nice time. then the next morning we drove back to the ferry and rufus fell head over heels down a stairway on the ferry and scared me half to death but somehow he was fine and i don't know how cuz i have never seen anyone take a spill like that and we made it home and the cat was still alive. more importantly, i got to go to five different record stores.

my sister lived in saratoga springs for a minute, well, maybe 1 year.

thanksgiving in suburban baltimore as usual. food was good. company a bit stiff until after dinner when we played this silly celebrity guessing game that was actually fun esp after 2 jack daniels rocks + 3 glasses wine w/dinner = I drink more than my wife's family.

Actual dinner - good food, awkward company, though playing my mom's Thanksgiving version of Scattergories was fun.

Rest of weekend was great, I got to see Robyn Hitchcock and The Coup in one day, ate lots of pie, saw snow in Seattle, hung out with friends.

clotpoll, Tuesday, 28 November 2006 04:42 (seventeen years ago) link

Yikes, Scott! Glad Rufus is okay! So many kids fall on the boat stairs.
Most inspired use of Tgfiving leftovers: a friend of mine made turkey-stuffing-mashed potato SPRING ROLLS, which we dipped in cranberry sauce. YUM!
I overcooked my contribution to the feast. I do this almost every year. Fell asleep on the sofa until brussel sprouts were pallid mush and butternut squash burned to the bottom of the pan. The squash was salvageable, but the sprouts—ech. Actually, my husband loved them.
Everyone was well behaved, and it was all over pretty quickly.

horrible, but why is this coming out in courier font? cool! but yesterday, I took a walk in East Rock Park and went on some trails and saw birds with orange red chests and a baby squirrel.

Robins? Towhees? Orioles?

Beth Parker (Beth Parker), Wednesday, 29 November 2006 01:56 (seventeen years ago) link

probably robins, but I had to do a google image search, and I'm not even certain.

youn, Wednesday, 29 November 2006 02:03 (seventeen years ago) link

Even though they're thought of as a sign of spring, I've seen robins here in fall and winter, feasting on juniper berries. Of course, it's so freakishly warm for this time of year—all bets are off as to what the migrating birds will do.
Speaking of birds, I put the whole turkey carcass on my dinner plate last night and picked away at it. No white meat left, so my husband's not interested anymore. Still some left for tonight, the tender oysters underneath. What are those, anyway?

Squaxin Island tribal casino buffet outdid itself today with serious meat and dessert options. Good mashed potatoes, sad looking brussel sprouts, sweet potatoes all done up with stuff I don't like (brown sugar/marshmallows/etc). Hung out in the hotel lobby knitting while Mr. Jaq and his mom lost $$. Glad to be home again. Dinner was cheese + crackers.

mookieproof, Thursday, 28 November 2013 08:41 (ten years ago) link

I was going to sleep at my sister's last night so we could get up and have max Thanksgiving time but people's flights were late so I just stayed home. Thankful for my bed. Later i am going to make the dressing and some rebellious brussels sprouts.

tehresa, Thursday, 28 November 2013 13:41 (ten years ago) link

dud: people in parade obviously lipsynching :(

tehresa, Thursday, 28 November 2013 15:26 (ten years ago) link

i agree footboards are a domestic disgrace, and i'm not even tall.

i had a very pleasant thanksgiving.

i have never heard of rebellious brussels sprouts, i've only ever seen little polite pallid neatly folded up ones.

estela, Friday, 29 November 2013 10:50 (ten years ago) link

imo brussel's sprouts are a crime. it was a glorious day that i realized i never ever had to eat another brussel's sprout. i think more than anything else in my life it made me appreciate adulthood.

one of my favotite things to reflect on is the privilege of adulthood. for example, this morning i got up at 3 and i've been drinking coffee and smoking on the patio since. i couldn't have done that as a child! and i would have missed the 5 raccoons that walked through the yard and into the bushes. i think they've encamped in the tree, which will make for a noisy day once the crows find out.

hmm, one of them just made a squeak in the next yard, so maybe they're moving on.

i tried to take a picture but i was holding a cigarette so all that shows is smoke. it is outrageous, as appropriate for this thread.

i had a tofurkey sandwich for my thanksgiving meal. it was delightful. no child could do that of her own volition!

my parents used to ask on the telephone what i'd had for dinner and i usually had to fudge the truth because i'm not really a dinner eater. "oh, i had a late lunch, i'll probably have a little something later." "i haven't decided yet, i'm still unwinding from the day." it turns out my sister had the same problem; the best was when she said she'd had a salad, when she'd really had some lettuce and gin tonics!

lxy, Saturday, 30 November 2013 13:50 (ten years ago) link

i just found out this is a thanksgiving thread, not an outrage thread. so i apologize for introducing outrages here. hpyy thanksgiving everyone.

i like my parents and aunt and uncle and the latter's golden retriever jake (dude is so ~feathery~ he has to get his feet trimmed!) and fat cat chloe

can never sleep there, tho

my mom spent the whole time staring at me and building a guilt trip about visiting for xmas. srsly it's creepy -- i'd totally go if she'd stop fuckin staring at me

no doubt i'll go anyway because she and i are all way old and they're gonna die and i'm their only child. at least no one voted for orange asshole, or i wouldn't have shown up for this

asked my (irish) uncle his thoughts on the late william trevor; he said 'he was a year ahead of us at trinity and we all thought he was a prick'

i know this is not a bad problem to have but i can't even tolerate people talking about donald trump being bad. i just don't want to hear about it anymore. and every year i realize more and more all of my worst personality traits come from my dad. everything he does i'm like, fuck, do i do that? nooooooooo
