Right, this thread is for telling folk that the 'proper' ILX is down again, so if you see this above the "ILX is back up" thread it means ILX is back down

Down :(

nu_onimo (nu_onimo), Wednesday, 1 November 2006 11:13 (eighteen years ago) link

Very slow, it might as well be.

M Grout (Mark Grout), Wednesday, 1 November 2006 11:29 (eighteen years ago) link

I'm getting fed up to fuck with ilx breaking down. what happened to all the money that was contributed to fix it?

Ste, Wednesday, 1 November 2006 11:57 (eighteen years ago) link

Stet spent it on organic cider

nu_onimo (nu_onimo), Wednesday, 1 November 2006 11:58 (eighteen years ago) link

Pash was just about to post an announcement about it when it went down :(

stet (stet), Wednesday, 1 November 2006 12:04 (eighteen years ago) link

Up and down like and uppy downy thing

nu_onimo (nu_onimo), Wednesday, 1 November 2006 12:34 (eighteen years ago) link

Darnation. I'm not getting poxy fuled though - just nothing...

Mr Edward Trifle, Wednesday, 1 November 2006 12:53 (eighteen years ago) link

Up and down like and uppy downy thing

You mean one of those things that yoyoers use, don't you? Can't remember what they're called either, but you're OTM.

StanM (StanM), Wednesday, 1 November 2006 14:12 (eighteen years ago) link

I was thinking more the kind of things pogo stickers use. One of them.

nu_onimo (nu_onimo), Wednesday, 1 November 2006 14:29 (eighteen years ago) link

Ste, that money was to find a new host in case the current ones were kicking us out. It was not to reprogram it (which is why it breaks all the time). people are kindly volunteering their talents to do that.

Ms Misery (MsMisery), Wednesday, 1 November 2006 14:38 (eighteen years ago) link

i.e. it is sitting in stet's bank account gathering interest, which he is using to buy organic cider. Probably.

ailsa_xx (ailsa_xx), Wednesday, 1 November 2006 14:41 (eighteen years ago) link

I'm now trying to think of other things which go up-and-down all the time. I'm sure I remember, back when I was a kid, that there was an expression about going 'up and down like a one-armed paper-hanger" but I might be wrong.

C J (C J), Wednesday, 1 November 2006 14:51 (eighteen years ago) link

I believe "whore's knickers" is the phrase of choice, though the more polite may prefer "bride's nightie"

nu_onimo (nu_onimo), Wednesday, 1 November 2006 14:57 (eighteen years ago) link

cheers MM, I'd forgotten about the hosting issue.

Ste, Wednesday, 1 November 2006 14:57 (eighteen years ago) link

Whore's drawers!

C J (C J), Wednesday, 1 November 2006 15:03 (eighteen years ago) link

like a 2 dollar hooker

No I'm not!

C J (C J), Wednesday, 1 November 2006 15:09 (eighteen years ago) link

Whore's drawers sounds better, you get away with it in polite company as people mistake it for hors d'oeuvres

GUESS PAPERS

token american, Wednesday, 1 November 2006 15:12 (eighteen years ago) link

grimly fiendish (simon), Wednesday, 1 November 2006 17:44 (eighteen years ago) link

I think the only place you're going to find dancing horses is on the Noise Board's ASK LAUREL thread.

jaymc (jaymc), Wednesday, 1 November 2006 17:48 (eighteen years ago) link

Yes, token, it's going up and down like guess papers. What?

StanM (StanM), Wednesday, 1 November 2006 18:12 (eighteen years ago) link

Those are really more plummeting horses, since they appear to have jumped off the Golden Gate Bridge.

olol o who o why

token american, Wednesday, 1 November 2006 18:24 (eighteen years ago) link

This was great! I got loads of work done this morning.

I Am Curious (George) (Slight Return) (Rock Hardy), Wednesday, 1 November 2006 18:40 (eighteen years ago) link

it's a radical step, but couldn't you limit a lot of the ILX problems by restricting access to logged-in users (with an 'in' for GoogleBot specifically)? That would have to cut down on a lot of the traffic and usage overwhelming the server.

milo (milo), Wednesday, 1 November 2006 18:42 (eighteen years ago) link

i think it's a bit late for such sticking-plaster measures. BRING ON THE GLORIOUS NEW DAWN. before it's too late and we all get bored.

grimly, fiendishly not logged in, Wednesday, 1 November 2006 19:25 (eighteen years ago) link

after 5 years if I'm still here, despite being bored, I doubt anything can drive me away.

What fine Fri morn? Here in West London it's Hollyoaks weather - dull and overcast.

Marcello Carlin (nostudium), Friday, 24 November 2006 09:43 (eighteen years ago) link

dull, overcast and wooden??

C J (C J), Friday, 24 November 2006 09:48 (eighteen years ago) link

I've got a very good view of Earl's Court from my window but I don't know whether it's made of wood.

Marcello Carlin (nostudium), Friday, 24 November 2006 09:51 (eighteen years ago) link

Earls Court is either made of Plywood or old stained stone. Depending on which direction you're facing.

M Grout (Mark Grout), Friday, 24 November 2006 09:58 (eighteen years ago) link

I'm viewing it from a northwesterly direction. It looks like a gaily-coloured Meccano model, the squat redness nicely offset by the imposing Fairy Snow blue of the Empress State Building immediately to its left.

At the star-studded ceremony Annie From Norway will be joined by a host of stars, including TV's Jan Leeming, Joanna Newsom, Dave Collins Out Of Dave And Ansil Collins, and TV's Bradley Walsh.

C J (C J), Friday, 24 November 2006 11:26 (eighteen years ago) link

Catering will be exclusively provided by The Comedy Italian Bloke Out Of TV's Ready, Steady, Cook, with sexy assistance from leading "girl about town" journalist Zoe "Willy" Williams!

Marcello Carlin (nostudium), Friday, 24 November 2006 11:43 (eighteen years ago) link

A friend of mine used to date a very cute and charming Italian bloke but she dumped him for the sole reason that he was unable to pronounce Heinz Baked Beans properly, referring to them as "High Back Edd Bins" which she found intensely irritating. I don't think he was The Comedy Italian Bloke Out Of TV's Ready Steady Cook though.

C J (C J), Friday, 24 November 2006 11:50 (eighteen years ago) link

When I was on Old Bailey jury service back in 1990 the prosecuting council persisted in spelling "Heinz" as "HIENZ" and pronouncing it as "HIENTZ."

He also pronounced "Tescos" to rhyme with "Lesbos" (as in the Greek island).

It was a fraud trial and it was a rather laboured analogy.

Marcello Carlin (nostudium), Friday, 24 November 2006 11:57 (eighteen years ago) link

Of course the world's South London Press will be on hand to capture memorable pics of madcap Timmy Mallett being given a baked bean bath by members of top pop combo Frank!

Anyway.

ILX *is* back, but basically just to note where we currently stand, so to quote Andrew's message there:

----

ilxor.com
What has happened to I Love Music/I Love Everything?

The hosting arrangements for the current server have been terminated. The server software has been re-written, and a new server has been purchased and will be installed at a new facility in Canada in the coming week. To make things more difficult, the server went down unexpectedly around the 25th of November and we've had to keep the site down in order to preserve the ILX database.
When will ILX be back?

When the new server is installed. This should be some time around the first few days of December. Watch this space for more specific details in the near future.
Who can I email to complain about this?

Complaining won't help. We have everything under control at the moment, it's just a time thing.
Where else can I go while this happens?

Why not do the work you're supposed to be doing? Either that or try the ILX sandbox.

I've been fucking listening! I've been looking at the spam-sorting solution you talked about, and I implemented your idea on PEW as soon as I read it.

I'm no longer interested in workarounds for the old code. It's riddled with holes. One could do an injection from the name field for a while there! I'm not going around attempting to close every damn hole solely to prevent *you* from taking advantage of it.

You *know* we're moving to new code. There is no advantage to "testing" the old code.

But I had admin on ILE and I did notthing to try to annoy everyone or publicly show off. No one else (other than the admins) know how I did it, so kindly stop blowing this out of proportion and unlock ILX. Or do you feel that you need to crucify me in the court of public opinion so the few miserable cunts who dislike me can have a great argument for banning me?

jw (ex machina), Sunday, 11 February 2007 18:01 (seventeen years ago) link

When have the admins listened to me?

-- jw (jon@////), February 11th, 2007

Jon, I've listened to you many times! You've emailed me about googleproofing stuff in the past, and I've got onto it str8away, just the same as I wd do for anyone! I even emailed you the other day to ask you what that "fuck you googleproof me" thing was about.

FWIW, I looked at ilx this morning (uk time), ACCIDENTALLY looked at the modlog on ile, and noticed that Jon had carried out a couple of admin actions last night, checked the admin page on ile, and found that he had somehow added himself to the ile moderators list with full privs. I emailed stet about this, and he pulled the site. I think stet did the right thing, because if Jon can exploit vunerabilities in the old code, so can other ppl. Getting in at top level means among other things, the ability to delete the entire database. Personally, I can't see Jon doing this. Other people I don't know about.

Norman Phay (Pashmina), Sunday, 11 February 2007 18:10 (seventeen years ago) link

so if you're worried about the other people, why does ILX say boards are down untill they can be secured from Jon? It does make it sound like he's sitting there destroying ilx. If that's the case, it's one thing...

dan selzer (dan selzer), Sunday, 11 February 2007 18:13 (seventeen years ago) link

Everybody:

Jon found a security hole in ILX that lets him get access to the database. Full access, so he can give himself mod privs, delete posts, threads, boards, the whole site.

He didn't tell Keith or me how he did it, he just took advantage of it. Keith and I are the only people with access to the server right now. We both have full-time jobs. The old ILX code running depends on people not trying to break it, or hack in.

If Jon is going to hack the boards by finding holes -- of which there are many -- we can't leave them up without doing a lot more admin work to try and stop him. On top of which, the new host's backup system hasn't been set up yet, so we have no backups right now.

We're going to move to the new secure code. It's not quite ready, it hasn't had all the features fleshed out, but it lets you post and is largely secure.

stet (stet), Sunday, 11 February 2007 18:14 (seventeen years ago) link

sede vacante (blueski), Sunday, 11 February 2007 18:24 (seventeen years ago) link

Um.. If you all know the code is bad & full of security holes, and are already in process of moving to the new secure code.. What is the problem? It seems like the "ILX is down" message should say that ILX goes back up when the board is secure, period, not when the board is secured from JW.. Can a backup be done quickly just for safety's sake and then the board be put it back up now with the notice that the code isn't fixed yet but nobody using the board is to do that again or risk being banned. After all the admin log did show immediately what happened and I presume it would show it again.

dar1a g (dar1a g), Sunday, 11 February 2007 18:35 (seventeen years ago) link

These are pretty much the same thing!

Yes, the message should be a bit better, but I'm at work and can only access the server from my phone! Otherwise I would get cracking on backups etc, aye.

stet (stet), Sunday, 11 February 2007 18:41 (seventeen years ago) link

But, no, the admin log need not show what happened. He can alter the DB at will.

stet (stet), Sunday, 11 February 2007 18:41 (seventeen years ago) link

that is hardly going to deter jon, the only registered user who bothers to exploit security issues with ILX code. banning doesn't work on savvy enough regulars who repeat offend.

there to preserve disorder (kenan), Sunday, 11 February 2007 19:17 (seventeen years ago) link

thanks heavens we have jon to speed the whole process up by forcing new code through, by demonstrating practically the flaws of the board that most people don't understand nor give a shit about, ignorant fools that they are. without his unannounced intervention, commandeering of admin rights, useful testing of locking privileges and whatnot these things could've been done TOMORROW by somebody we neither know nor like!

if the board were to continue running with code that's that flawed, eventually sooner or later somebody would hack in & cause some serious problems, i mean, what happens the day that some random kid on the internets decides to delete the whole board?

Yes. I figured it was an OK risk given that it hadn't happened in all the preceding years, and the code would only be up for a few months till the switchover. Ah well.

So the argument is that JW exploited a hole in the code, and so now you're shutting the whole thing down on principle? Why wouldn't you have shut the whole thing down on principle years ago? Why is this different?

No, the argument is that the risk above is now too big to take. If Jon's going to be such a loose cannon that he can't restrain himself from hacking what we know to be insecure code, I'm not going to run around trying to stop him.

I think the point is, Jon found a HUGE security hole, exploited it, and the admins are not sure how he did it. Jon would probably not nuke ILE, but the hole is severe enough that if someone else found it, the consequences could be dire. Most importantly, there is currently no backup of ILX, so the entire history could be lost if someone exploited the hole.

So a combo of factors in play here. Can't say I blame the admins. It'd be one thing if there were backups but in absence of them, it's probably best to leave the site down.

Point well taken.

This is still kinda funny, though.

there to preserve disorder (kenan), Sunday, 11 February 2007 19:28 (seventeen years ago) link

This is different because years ago, nobody actually had hacked their way into getting database access. The board is not being shut down permanently, only 'till it can be put up with the new code.

I guess the point is that in the first place it's not OK for Jon, or anyone else to hack into the database, and more urgently, now that Jon has shown it can be done, it's extremely likely that someone else will do it. Like the CSS flooding thing referred to upthread, Jon didn't CSS flood the shimura curves thread, someone else did, but w/o Jon's example of showing it could be done in the first place, it likely wouldn't have happened.

From how I'm reading it here I don't think the admins understand what I did. I don't want to talk too much about what I did, but without knowing a little bit more about how stuff works, I couldn't get access to the site at a global level let alone raw database access. I only every had moderator powers on ile. I made a little two little mod actions that showed up in the log and that was it. The same vulnerability would let me take moderator actions as any other moderator, but I decided not to do that as it would be really annoying to figure out what was going on.

I don't really see the logic in keeping ilx down since only a few people know how to do this and in the like 20 hours I was mod for, I did nothing with it. As far as the defensibility of my own actions, that isn't really pertinent to this.

Also, I have no idea what Sarah's saying. Maybe she should fuck off if she wants to slander me privately to everyone in the world?

Presumably this is what will happen:

- ILX to remain down until nu-code has been fully tested (or admins to RISK further hacking by putting them back up too soon)
- nu-ILX then launched
- everything returns to how it was the day before yesterday except we can all sleep soundly safe in the knowledge that it will now be much more difficult for a logged in regular (or otherwise) to hack the server in order to demonstrate a flaw with the existing code
- no 'punishment' on anyone because after all no real harm done eh?

And banning someone from ile is not ok, but bullying several posters off of posting to threads you start and being a hateful lunatic is totally ok?

No, but there are ways of dealing with people who do that, and being liable to fuck off every ILX poster as opposed to people who can't find there own way of dealing with the problem you describe isn't really going to endear you to that many people. Hovering over a city with a nuclear bomb isn't an effective cockroach squisher. People who do what you describe will get what's coming to them in many ways, some day. You aren't the person to decide to do that (I'm guessing I know who you've banned, right?)

hi, several xposts, erm, just to say that distasteful as it first seemed, i forgave jon pretty quickly when that thread was de-indexed. it was a joke that kinda went too far but it's not caused any lasting damage. the whole 'lj bullying' thing is kinda blown up slightly, it's just that whenever dom and company get bored they need a washboard to scrape, and for some reason i make a pretty good washboard. what's worse is when people judge me, this causes me FAR more grief than the noizy 'lol poppage'-style sniping.

No, the argument is that the risk above is now too big to take. If Jon's going to be such a loose cannon that he can't restrain himself from hacking what we know to be insecure code, I'm not going to run around trying to stop him.

Yeah, but how do you know for sure that code is insecure without checking it? Ideally, he would have immediately posted as an admin and said "hi guys, there's a flaw, look at what it got me!" and proposed a fix, but it's not like he'd be able to confirm there was a problem without checking. Catch 22? To me, blaming it on him is dickish since:
1. To our knowledge, there is no non-member attempting to hack it
2. In the long period of time it's been up, no one else has attempted to hack it
3. I think that I trust Jon enough to not fuck with things.

It's not like some jerk from off-board came in and tried to mass delete the database.

mh (mike h.), Monday, 12 February 2007 02:59 (seventeen years ago) link

but how do you know for sure that code is insecure without checking it
You know for sure it's insecure because there are about a thousand obvious ways ILX can be hacked, especially since he has Mod access on one board and can insert whatever HTML he likes, including javascript.

This code is obsolete. We all know it's being retired as soon as possible. There is no useful purpose served by "checking" for "problems", since any problems aint gonna get fixed, because I'm not spending the time crawling through the code patching every damn hole when we're due to move.

1. Yes, which is why the boards stayed up despite having code like cheese.
2. See 1.
3. You might; I don't have any reason to. Perhaps this is past tantrums coming back to haunt him, but I remember the shitstorm after Andrew fucked with noise privs.

Nu-Edward III (edward iii), Monday, 12 February 2007 15:20 (seventeen years ago) link

Nath, there is a fundamental difference between reviewing the code and reporting a problem and 'hacking into the database' and causing problems -- without telling anybody, and letting the mods discover what had happened after the fact. If that distinction isn't clear then I don't know what to say. I've had my own questions about these last couple of days but you have no idea about the level of anger these and previous instances have caused among the mods.

Pash, Stet and KeefW in particular are dedicated to providing -- as has been noted, on a strictly *volunteer* basis -- the best possible home for ILX at the present time. They coordinated the effort, they have shown a hell of a lot of energy and good judgment in general, and they do want make sure that ILX runs efficiently and securely. No offense but you might want to cut *THEM* slack first.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Monday, 12 February 2007 15:20 (seventeen years ago) link

Uh, that is not Chicago Sarah.

JordanC (JordanC), Monday, 12 February 2007 15:25 (seventeen years ago) link

Also, Jon hasn't done much (though random banning of people you don't like must raise some sort of ethical issues), but he's threatened enough, and fucked shit up in the past enough, that the mods thought it wasn't a risk worth taking.

As Ned says, a helpful person would send an email going "look, here is a loophole I have found, do you want to fix it" rather than fucking shit up for everyone else and claiming that somehow that was a better way of drawing said loophole to the attention of Keith, Stet and Pashmina, if he's really doing this for the collective good of ILX.

ailsa_xx (ailsa_xx), Monday, 12 February 2007 15:26 (seventeen years ago) link

I mean, I'm not saying he should be applauded for what he did, but in some crazy ass way I can understand (from his snooty geek point of view wink wink). He should be spanked (heh!), I mean, told off for what he did, but it's not the end of the world/ILX.

I mean, everyone acts as though he's destroyed ILX. FFS, he just hacked into the database and banned/elected himself mod. That's quickly solved, no?

ailsa_xx (ailsa_xx), Monday, 12 February 2007 15:35 (seventeen years ago) link

There is a post upthread that apparently people either haven't read or are willfully ignoring. Let me repost it:

-- stet (bonald...), February 11th, 2007. (later)

Ned Raggett (Ned), Monday, 12 February 2007 15:36 (seventeen years ago) link

I don't think that's exactly what principle means (xp or randomly) :)

The principle is that you don't ban people because you don't like them. Which, yeah, isn't a Fundamental Human Right or anything, and obviously jon comes from the noise board where that principle doesn't hold at all. Of course it's wrong, you have to be retarded not to realize this but he did it to show how loopy ilx was. FFS he could have wrecked ILX but he DID NOT.

Ned do you want me to move the wall a bit closer?

Matt DC (Matt DC), Monday, 12 February 2007 15:50 (seventeen years ago) link

Could you please?

Nath, can I repeat something I JUST FREAKIN' POSTED FROM STET'S EARLIER COMMENT:

The old ILX code running depends on people not trying to break it, or hack in.

If Jon is going to hack the boards by finding holes -- of which there are many -- we can't leave them up without doing a lot more admin work to try and stop him.

In otherwards, could you please allow for the fact that, perhaps, the mods maybe possibly kinda knew that there were problems with the code as it stands?

Ned Raggett (Ned), Monday, 12 February 2007 15:53 (seventeen years ago) link

xpost
yeah but Nath that's like saying "Sure he had a gun, but he only shot that person in the foot. He COULD have killed him!" ;) (I'm just having fun with you.)

also, we must all remember that this is just ILx. Not terribly huge and important in the great scheme of life. (as opposed to our feet.)

Ms Misery (MsMisery), Monday, 12 February 2007 15:53 (seventeen years ago) link

In other words, it's the hacking itself that's the problem, not what he did or didn't do once he'd hacked in.

I don't know how many other ways there are for people to say this.

Of course it's wrong, you have to be retarded not to realize this but he did it to show how loopy ilx was.

And the first time he did this, people took his intentions into account and said "thanks, but don't do it that way". But this isn't the first time he's done this kind of shit, or even the tenth.

onimo (nu_onimo), Monday, 12 February 2007 15:57 (seventeen years ago) link

I'm happy he did hack into the database and showed us it was fragile

mmm, yes, because NONE of us knew that, did we?

come on: this code is held together with chewing gum and string. that's why it's being recoded, FFS! which jon knows, as does everyone else: what the fuck is the point of "pointing out" security holes in something that's about to be canned anyway?

i can't believe anyone's buying this "it was for the public good" line. it was to noise people up (pun vaguely intended), as is so often the case with jon's little escapades. in which case:

I just mean: cut him some slack

no. don't get me wrong: i like jon some/most of the time, and enjoy his posts. but every so often he seems to have this compulsion to stick his dick into ILX, which only serves to fuck it up for everyone else. why doesn't he cut the board some slack?

grimly fiendish (simon), Monday, 12 February 2007 15:57 (seventeen years ago) link

The principle is that you don't ban people because you don't like them.

Yeah, and why I'm saying it's all very well going, "oh it's just Kate, she's a bit loopy and annoying haha", but I imagine it being someone other than Kate may lead the likes of Nathalie (in fact,it is just nathalie, isn't it?) to taking this a bit more seriously.

In case you were suggesting I didn't know what a principle was. If it wasn't me you were getting at, ignore me.

Entirely true. Those who have made it part of their lives on a regular basis via site maintenance, coding, etc., however, have an understandable interest in database and hacking concerns that I think is being ignored or misunderstood by a number of those who haven't. And that's a damn shame. Nobody's looking for hosannas to boost our collective ego, but exactly what is so surprising to you about moderator worries about this situation?

Also, those who have made it part of their lives on a regular basis by READING and CONTRIBUTING (that aren't morons).

Though this is going to end with RJG turning up and telling everyone to let go, isn't it?

if Jon had decided to ban, say, Ned or Dan or Allyzay or Nabisco or someone who isn't quite the polariser that Kaet is, the reaction might be slightly different.

Well, duh, but he'd've had no reason to ban those people. Okay, maybe Ally...but not the others! Point being: there are a number of people on the boards behaving badly in various ways and NO ONE IS DOING ANYTHING ABOUT THEM. Like, not even really standing up to them and saying "Your behavior sucks. Please stop or don't be my/our friend/s." Jon is arguably one of them, everyone's perspective on this will differ. But the lovely virtues of tolerance and politeness and cultivating NICENESS in the world are running up against the fact that plenty of people are oblivious or unconcerned about tactful silences and the gentle pressure of suggestion. It's occasionally helpful to have people around who don't mind rocking the boat, as much of a pain in the ass as they inevitably are.

Hi Kim! Remember when we had Noise Admin powers and Jon threw a huge shitfit even though we didn't cause the least bit of damage (and never had any intention of doing so)? Remember how I told Jon to calm the fuck down and noted that if he ever did the same thing with ILE, he'd find the whole thing hilarious and would tell us all that it wasn't such a big deal? I'm sure he'll show up soon with his nose running and try to tell us that the two situations aren't the same though ...

I'm still waiting for Jon to explain how this is different.

Well, duh, he had no reason to ban Kate either. Also, if I was appointing people to be the judge of who ILX would be better off without (which I'm not, and never would) - Jon wouldn't exactly be top of the list, so why the fuck he gets to appoint himself the guardian of ILX is anyone's guess. xpost to Laurel

(also, Kate doesn't even know about any of this, so it hasn't exactly worked)

Yeah, but it's not much of a principle if you have to go "imagine if it was someone who counts" (er, not that Kate doesn't count). The principle is that it matters more if it's someone unpopular (I'd make an analogy to legal representation for terrorists, but I want to be able to turn up to Nu-Shimura Curves gigs without wearing a disguise).

And I think Nathalie acknowledges that it was wrong, but doesn't think it's important - it's Laurel that's going "Go go gadget-Jon!"

In otherwards, could you please allow for the fact that, perhaps, the mods maybe possibly kinda knew that there were problems with the code as it stands?

Furthermore, from what the mods and Jon have both said: the mods are not aware of the exploit that Jon used, and it is an exploit that would seem to allow him to use the boards *as any user* - he certainly said he could carry out mod actions and have it recorded that another mod had done them.

As people upthread have said: if you find a hole like that, the ethical thing to do is inform the people responsible. If they ignore you, you're then free to tell people about it. Actually *using* the hole is not ethical.

Andrew, this is not MY principle (or lack of), I've said all the way through that this is wrong from top to bottom. I sort of guiltily laughed at Laurel going "lolz, it's just Kate, we're better off without her" and then suggested she might see it a bit differently if it was one of her friends instead of Kate.

You don't find it hilarious, you silly little twat, you're just one of the kids who enjoys the opportunity to pat himself on the back for not being ridiculous enough to care about something other people do. These blow-ups are always plagued by that sort of shit, but for once maybe you could shut the fuck up about it and just let things get hashed out.

It is not the moderators or anyone else's job to stop people 'behaving badly', whatever that means. Pretty much the only people who ever get banned are persistent trolls, racists, people posting viruses and the occasional Marissa-type absolute fruitloop.

If we banned or cautioned everyone who was flaming or being a cunt towards another poster we'd a) never get any fucking work done and b) have no posters except Nabisco.

"Point being: there are a number of people on the boards behaving badly in various ways and NO ONE IS DOING ANYTHING ABOUT THEM."

Laurel, you're right about that, and I hope it's going to change. But there are about a million better ways to deal with it than by sneaking in under cover of darkness and banning someone who pisses you off. Or did you think that would increase the peace somehow?

Do you really think Jon did it because there was too much bullying on ILX? Even after his Louis Jagger bully thread?

stet (stet), Monday, 12 February 2007 16:20 (seventeen years ago) link

the next time this happens the culprit's ISP should be informed that their EULA has been violated and given the necessary evidence to prove it.

right now, the mods have decided to leave the main board down instead of continuing to play whack-a-mole with probably further abuse of the old code, and have left the sandbox up for us to play in, so no loss really.

other than that there's very little that's pertinent at this time! ilx plays host to a number of terrible children, news to no one, ever, move along or get made fun of by bored civil servants!
