it was ok. i know i botched a couple things and forgot some stuff in my haste but everyone did. i wrote something for every question. the only big failures were a contracts question i got frazzled on and answered in a really bizarre order and part of an evidence question that had a rule i could never understand (but it had 6 parts that i answered most of). secured transactions question was identical to one i did in practice. no con law questions. ok not gonna think about it anymore!

anyway i think i'm gonna pass. multiple choice all day tomorrow, which is hard, but more studying won't help. i don't know what to do with myself!

i keep thinking of what other stuff i did wrong. it's so hard not to ugh

yeah i can play with the cat but she sleeps from 8 am to 9 pm mostly. now i am watching her sleep half on her back with her legs spread open and in the air. yesterday when i was laying on my back reading flashcards out loud she would jump up on the bed with a chirp and lay down on my stomach. lol cats.

one thing i was amazed at was the number of people who didn't come back for the afternoon session! there were a number of empty seats. that must feel bad.

a good thing to consider about all those empty seats this afternoon is that those who complete the exam must have a much higher pass rate than the statistics indicate.

yeah, the scores are also adjusted so anyone that shows up and gets only a few points is bringing down the mean score, which is good (for me)

you guys shoulda seen how many people in the room though! it's in a convention center "expo hall" so if you imagine an "expo" of your choice, it's the room without the boat 'n' rv show exhibits and just rows and rows of tables w/ 2 people at each. about 2/3 of the room is for laptop people, the rest for handwriters. it must have looked so strange to a normal person, or maybe if an alien came and this is the first thing it saw.

they have those downstairs below my work and it's always CPA tests. one time there were a bunch of girls out front waiting for the test to get over, holding signs to congratulate their boyfriends. my favorite sign said THE SUMMER OF OUR LIVES STARTS NOW

lxy i have already made my drink while waiting for this page to load. i used about 1/6 of a lime because i have a strange way of cutting limes. i measured approximately a shot with mine eyes. i used 5 cubes. i am drinking out of the same mason jar as always (belongs to real tenant). probably more seltzer than necessary but i really like seltzer. tasty drink.

harbl, does passing the bar in your state mean you can practice in other states as well?

was wondering this

it's complicated. passing, in itself, doesn't even mean i can practice in maryland because i have to also pass the character and fitness stuff (i will) and then get sworn in to be admitted. so the exam is not enough, it's just the hardest part. then each state has its own way of deciding who gets to practice. some states will accept any other state's bar exam and then do their own little character and fitness thing, then others will let you in if you've been practicing for a few years in another state (might have to take a small state-specific exam for some of them), and others won't let you in at all until you pass their particular exam. you can transfer your multistate exam score to other states though. washington, dc lets you in if your multistate score is high enough but it costs like $600 or something. if i ever work in dc it will probably be for the federal government so i don't have to be admitted there, you can take any bar you want to work for them.

also another fun fact is that all states except maryland and washington require the multistate professional responsibility exam but fortunately i chose one of the two states that is not ethical. but that topic was on our normal bar exam, so they do care a little. if i moved states i might need to take that too.

this thread has reminded me to track down proper mason jars in australia, which i just have, but the question is before i order some, are regular or wide mouth mason jars best for drinking out of, because i forget what f.'s mom uses but i always drink out of them when i am at her house. supposedly wide mouth jars say wide mouth on the side of them but i wasn't observant enough (because i never am) to notice whether hers did or not. help me sandbox and you will be helping f. for he loves them also, we had an effusive discussion of praise about them sitting at his mom's table.

thanks estela. actually today i feel more worried about it :(. i hate interviews. i get too nervous and do not give thoughtful answers like i would normally because i am pretty thoughtful normally. not like they have any jobs for me anyway though. most of the hiring will be in rural areas because they have fewer attorneys in those offices, if one leaves they have to hire someone else. i really want to work in the city and don't want to relocate to appalachia so much. gahhhhhh

i passed first round but i have to wait for a vacancy somewhere to get second round :(

i got a letter about a 2nd round interview but i'm conflicted because it's in another county and i want to stay here and i wonder if it means they will be hiring here soon. i love the ppl in the office i'm in now a lot (i'm working there because i got a grant to "volunteer" so i'm not an official hire yet) and i want to stay. maybe i should ask my boss and boss's boss what they think.

no other place would be as perfect as here for the following reasons:

• jail is a 5 min walk from my house
• people hate every cop here, you win all the time
• everyone and everything is funny and intersting

also my boss is a hilarious gay and i made a best lawyer friend in the office <3333333

the juveniles i have worked with have been mostly ok. boys i mean, the girls are more demanding. i had a juvenile robber the other day and the intake lady was filling out the special form for juveniles where they ask about life and she was like "do you have any hobbies?" and he laughed and said "i like smoking" and i lolled. she scolded him, i didn't like that.

i finally got myself a dozen wide mouth pint jars, i had to get them shipped from melbourne, i truly love them. they are so satisfying to drink from. and to look at. and to hold in my hand.

i got a box of quart mason jars when i had a free shipping coupon for jcpenney.com. i'll get some smaller ones next time, too. i had a couple drinking glasses i got at a thrift store but i got frustrated with them and threw them out. they were too narrow for harbl megahands to clean without a dishwasher. mason jars are great.

i was getting used to the idea of juvenile but i think because i told this other guy in the office about my interview he was like, oh a vacancy i'm gonna transfer there (i'm not mad, like i told him i didn't wanna go there), and now the interview is for his job in the office i'm in now. now i feel anxious there will be some unknown obstacle like another person interviewing for it who has been here longer? ughhdg;dlgkjdfg;lkdjgdfg;lkjdfgdfl;gjk

gosh i have such a weakness for rotten girls.

there's this girl at pilates i love. the other day she (who is way, way better at pilates than me) was lying on a mat next to mine doing nothing while the instructor was busy with someone else so i said to her in a stern voice, 'instead of just lying there you might want to study my form and pick up some useful, improving tips.' at first she was startled because she thought i was serious but then she lolled and said, 'i can't look at you, it's just too intimidating,' and we lolled and lolled then later from across the room i shouted at her that she was marvelous and she did this terrible smug nod and i thought, 'i bet the sandbox would <3 you'.

i really feel terrible estela! like i don't want to go on. now i have to go back to this office for 4 more weeks while the boss and 2 other ladies think about it, and then they'll hire one of the other 19 and it'll be like, oh. ok. bye? everyone there likes me i feel except the boss, i can't tell with him. he's extremely serious while the rest of us spend a lot of time laughing and being vulgar. i do a good job though. i'm going to get my last grant paycheck soon. i might go spend some time in ny w/ my parents instead of working because it will drive me crazy.

the awkwardness is on your side! make it as awkward as you can! that way they will feel way too stink to hire anyone else!

exactly! i think if i don't try to anticipate every bad thing that happens it will happen and i will be surprised. it really works! i feel better today, i guess. everyone was shocked when i told them how long i'd have to wait. boss went out to do more interviews. the office manager pulled me aside and told me she had told him he had to hire me, but i don't think he listens to her, she's just an office lady. some people think maybe they are interviewing so many people either because they are required to or because there will be more than one job opening up in the near future. i don't know. no more thinking!

today my boss thanked me for coming to work today, he's so awkward. at least that means he likes me, right? guy who is transferring said he *knows* i will get the job but ehhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh

i'm distraught because they said within a month and it's been 29 days. on monday my boss came to me and awkwardly asked if i "like it here." i think that's good? but i still haven't heard anything and i don't wanna call them and ask because it feels awkward and i'm afraid of the answer.

he also asked me on friday if i had read a court of appeals case that came out 2 days before. i said no but i volunteered to read it for him and then i did and told him what i thought.

pink eye is mostly gone, symptoms started sunday. the job i'm doing at the same place (same exact job, basically) was a volunteer position i got a grant for when they weren't hiring. i would have to find something else to do at least part time because i stopped getting paychecks from the grant last month.

oh man, that truly sucks. They need to man-up and get you hired on.

Can you (or the boss guy) ask the 2 ladies what needed to be different for them to have considered you more strongly? It could be a bunch of guff, but also could maybe be useful info for the future.

i'm guessing the other person had prior trial experience, which like no one has when they start w/ this office. i honestly don't want to know. i feel like i'm not a good interviewer. he said he was trying to see if they might make another opening and he called a few people for me to see about other jobs. i am appreciative but it's not the same :(

i finally got the interview with the county office i was supposed to interview with a long time ago, and then i called my boss and he was very willing to fax them a recommendation letter today. i have mixed feelings because i don't want to commute that far but maybe i won't get it anyway!

good luck with this! and maybe (banal sentiments here) the long distance will turn out to be a blessing in disguise, esp. if you're comfortable where you're living but want a bit of exposure to new ppl and new communities.

took me about 50 min to get there for the interview post rush-hour but google maps said 35. i need to figure out a faster route. lack of public transit options is frustrating, annapolis has NO trains and the bus/light-rail combo would take me 2 hours. it's a year contract funded by a grant, but same agency as i've been working for. hoping the state budget will improve and i can become a real state employee and transfer back here after that? probably not though. at least now i can afford to buy yarn lol. and i will probably go on a book shopping spree. and buy clothes. it's not really official yet so maybe i should hold off on that for a couple weeks.

and, uh, i already bought a jug of rum. *someone* is coming over for dinner and i'm gonna be drunk woohoooooo

once my goody two shoes boyfriend said he was going to get really drunk tonight and then a few hours later i saw him sitting politely on a chair with his legs crossed holding a small glass of wine so i shouted, 'look at him, he's gone troppo' and then my sister and i laughed like drains and then not that long after that i broke up with him and he said it was because i was afraid to love which made me feel slightly sad for myself instead of for him which i can now see might have been annoying for him in the middle of getting broken up with.

someone special, i think. i didn't get too drunk but i acted disgracefully and had a fun time.

yeah i'm doing it but i don't like it most of the time. every day is a deluge of problems and unfinishable work, and someone is always unhappy with you. i hate the feeling of people being unhappy with me. i guess this is what it's like to be a grown-up. jobs lol

what kind of 'emotional training' - if any - do get during law school? for like, dealing with the clients (esp. the kind of clients you have).

i couldn't really answer this when you asked it bc i was too tired, but the answer is: none. the clients are pretty challenging for people-persons and non-people-persons (hi) alike. many of them have multiple very serious problems such as drug or alcohol addiction, severe learning disabilities, extreme rage at everything, weird attachment issues where they want you to talk to them and not other people, inability to remember what you just said to them, general rudeness and other inexplicable behaviors, smelliness, etc.
i had just typed out one of my special unique experiences from today but i thought it might violate the attorney-client privilege maybe

basically there are so many dudes who have done so many drugs and are ruined and oscillate between anger/rudeness and docile stupidity, and i have to talk to them all the time. also drug moms, and girls who get in fights and ruin people's stuff

haha no. that's in a different county than where i work. but the whole case fascinated me! this guy has posted his flyers near my house and he has placed his toilet-sculptures in baltimore, so i knew about him before this happened. his myspace page is amazing. he is very paranoid and his understanding of the government is very interesting. i was just following the case out of amusement. although it was so stupid and obvious he never should have been charged with anything and he had to spend time in jail AND a state mental institution and his pit beef business closed because of it. even i could have won that case! he would have been a nightmare client though.

i had jury duty today and i came kind of close to getting on the jury for a 1st deg. murder trial with a lot of witnesses. i was scared because it would be so bad for my coworkers and me if i was out for so long. i need encouragement because i am in court 8 of the next 10 work days and i think i'm going to die. i have to see 7 people in jail tomorrow! my usual tired-limit is 3 people. then we are hiring 2 new people, and i'm going on my small vacation. phew.

if you die because of court 8 and 7 jailbirds, you will not be able to have 1 small vacation. so please don't die.

(i am not exactly clear if the 2 new hires are part of the problem or part of the solution so i didn't include them in the equation.)

oh, i misarranged some sentences. the 2 new hires are part of the solution that will give me less time in court and fewer clients!

i was wrong, the client was v lucky and got a judge who is a stickler for starting at a certain time and the state put its witness on call and she was late so they made us an offer we couldn't refuse and there was no trial

hard to remember how i used to feel about it but it comes and goes in waves. sometimes i'm like what the fuuuuuuuck this is bullshit and other days i'm like ok. mostly i am just mad at it and the people who believe in it. there is a lot of false helping. people who believe that what they're doing is helping someone. for example probation with mandatory drug treatment or anger management (and if you fail probation getting more jail time than you would if probation didn't exist, so you get punished additionally rather than for the original offense) or the crap prosecutors put domestic violence victims through. also SO many people who think making drugs a crime is doing anything for anyone. i could go on!

yeah it's more like they are lined up in order and we strike until we run out of strikes. the judge asks the questions, which we suggest. i think in most states the lawyers get to question the jurors. there is a white noise machine, i hate that.

i got a summons! but i don't know if i have to appear until the night before!

what's this white noise business about? i've been called for jury duty a ton of times but i've never been empaneled. which is fine by me because i'd hate it. one time i got all the way to the part about sitting in the jury place, but then one of the lawyers nixed me for an unspoken reason. never noticed any white noise.

in dc, ppl got called up to 'approach the bench' and were briefly questioned with judge, prosecutor and defense attorney right there. but no one else in the (large) room could hear because of the white noise machine WHICH WAS REALLY FUCKING ANNOYING.

thank u all but i guess i lied again. we did too good of a job and made it poof go away. it was gonna be kind of cool because this guy who is married had at least 3 other girls that all knew about each other and had each other's phone numbers/facebook/etc. so there was a lot of cross-harassment and this lady got pissed one day after he didn't answer any of her 50 phone calls, lured him to a gas station (she was gonna get him to go to her house but he said he had no gas so she came to "help"), falsely claimed he robbed her and made 4 different reports about it to various things like 911, statement of charges, 2 different stories at the hospital. oh well! she even helpfully gave the state a printout of a facebook wall conversation she had with one of the other girls that was like "hes mine tonight imma be movin on top of him go play wit ur grandkids" lol.

also when individual jurors go to the bench with the white noise they do that so if anyone wants to say they were raped or are a racist they don't have to do it out loud. so just imagine all the bad things you are missing!

oh i get it. we all had to say our dirt out loud for everyone to hear. or if a person wanted to say something secret s/he would have to say in front of everyone "i have something secret to say" and then go up to the judge's counter and whisper. no white noise in king county.

yeah we can request it for certain questions, so if anyone says "yes" to the question (which is pretty vague, like have you been the victim of a crime) they go to the bench to explain so no one is pointed out. some of those people might get on the jury eventually.

i again did not have a jury trial today so i am sitting at the table with someone else doing one, it's an inmate-on-inmate cutting! gangs and stuff! i watched some of the jury selection and one guy got excused for cause because he said he did not trust authority or the cops, which i think is not good cause. sounds like a suitable juror to me!

i would like to be employed as a court-appointed tsker.

the mural house came back until it was unlisted again this week! not sure what's going on with that. i don't think i should get it though, not enough garden space. i have my eyes on another one now that is on an interesting street and next to a very large park. i need to get moving though. my friend said to find a buyer's agent i can go to open houses that i don't care about just so i can see if i like the agent and then ask them to be my agent. i feel weird doing it though! how did you buy a house?

my agent was the brother of jergins' life-long friend. if i'd met him at open house i never would have picked him, i think. we're nothing alike, and he hated the house i wanted to buy. once i convinced him that i wasn't just making a rash decision to buy the first house i saw, he supported me 100% and really fought on my behalf. in the end he worked really hard for me, and was completely upfront and honest and generous and flexible.

i am not certain he would've done the same for a complete stranger--even though i'd never met him, he'd known j. since they were kids so it was kind of a family connection in a way--so i can't say it would've been rhe same if i'd picked him out of the phonebook or whatever.

so my recommendation would be to find someone who is a family friend or has some connection to someone you're connected with. or ask people you know to give you a referral. once you find someone, be sure of yourself, do your part to learn about the process, ask one billion questions, and make sure your agent knows you're smart, dedicated and serious about buying. s/he will, in my experience, work harder for you if you're a partner in the process.

my one friend who has bought a house in the past few years had one agent who was bad and yelled at his wife and made her cry. then they switched agents and got a good one but she is not an agent anymore or has moved or something. i'm gonna ask my boss if he knows anyone.

i'm feeling a bit panicked bc 2 months ago there were lots of pretty houses in the area we want, for good prices, and now there are none for less than $450k. hopefully this is just a spring/summer trend and they'll drop back down a bit next fall?? we can't buy anything for at least 7 months anyways, bc it looks like (fingers crossed) ytth will be starting a new job soon.

we looked at 3 places today, all out of our price range, but one of them was INSANE - it had those cute old fashioned fire burning stoves in like three rooms, a HUGE fully landscaped garden with fountains and shit and an outdoor hot tub and this completely weird 'viewing room'. it was about twice what we could afford but it was fun to see how the 1% lives.

it IS adorable! but also pretty industrial. it's zoned industrial, there's a factory at the end of the block, warehouse behind, business across, etc.

that's why it was so hard to buy, too. no one would lend for the property cuz of the zoning. but that's why i wanted to live here!!

i was in an epic battle with one other person who wanted the position and he was like eh i have a babby so he gets to be closer to home and i probably get to do some felonies in big girl court now (not big ones just like burglaries and possession w/ intent to start). but the big boss is on vacation so it's not clear what exactly will happen. might be a raise in the spring because a really old person is retiring. i'm scared bc i have serious impostor syndrome though.

I have been having a lot of that myself lately :( Promotion I got in March has turned into a scary big job w/ lots of people after me for stuff and having to keep track of people and what they are doing in far away lands and now i am getting employees and omg too much stuff to deal with.

i never wear sweaters because i'm always warm, but ugh

it was a lady and she was actually pretty nice and let me in just this once because it was my first time there. but this was a regular state facility housing federal inmates and i have been in like 4 different locations and this was the only one where cardigans were banned. also my shirt underneath was sleeveless and that is also banned, which i knew.

i also always like to wear cardigans, a lot of regular longsleeve shirts make me feel weird. i have broad shoulders so stuff doesn't fit right and pullover sweaters make me look funny imo.

I am the same! I even wear cardigans most days in summer because i also find a lot of sleeveless shirts to be weird/unprofessional and a/c is awful!

i got reclassified at work now that means a very tiny meaningless raise! i bought dinner for us both incl one 1/2 price bottle of wine (happy hour) and 2 sazeracs and a pizza

today I was in a store that had lots of novelty gifts and there was a little bottle of hand sanitizer with a pic of a boy and it said "pee pee" with an arrow pointing to his front and "poo poo" with an arrow to the back and all I could think about was peepoop patel.

a client wrote me a letter that said in part "you are the best attorney i have EVER had! i could not have done this without you." he's in jail, which makes the second sentence quite comical.

yeah i'm ok. sore neck and stuff and i do feel a bit of brain fog but i feel that way a lot so i don't know if it was caused by whatever might have happened to my head. i don't believe i actually hit my head. everything went black for just a second, it was kind of a thunderclap-ish feeling. i'm just sitting and not doing anything now that i've gone to the jail and eaten lunch w/ a work friend i haven't seen in a while.

i'm excited now too. the stuff he won't fix is not a big deal, the house is super old. i need to think about movers. also i need advice what to plant in the box in front. it's about 4 square feet and has an awkward rose bush in it and that's it. i want kind of a rain garden type thing that doesn't require much weeding.

i am v much in love with the idea of awkward roses come springtime tbh

i stopped by to take a picture of it to show my mom because i asked for gardening advice. there are a couple other awkward plants there that i hadn't even noticed.
