i found my dressing gown in a different room from where i left it being employed as a lining for a small dog's bed, having been dragged there, i suspect, by a determined brigand with a set of very small white choppers.

I am outraged for you, estela.

i just found the stove left on many hours after f. cooked some oatmeal, the house could have caught fire and harry and i might have been burned to a crisp.

estela, Monday, 22 June 2009 03:51 (fourteen years ago) link

ytth is actually a total slob, i'm not exaggerating. but i knew this before i moved here, so i have only myself to blame.

smoove operator, Monday, 22 June 2009 03:51 (fourteen years ago) link

Also back on topic I am outraged because my faucet water filter will not stay attached and now I have to return it. But at least it is an outrage of a domestic nature that is not my fault!

estela, Monday, 22 June 2009 05:25 (fourteen years ago) link

wait, who is supposed to be outraged in this scenario, the daisy or me?

lxy, Monday, 22 June 2009 05:29 (fourteen years ago) link

the daisy is probably just sad and confused and cold.

estela, Monday, 22 June 2009 05:34 (fourteen years ago) link

tehresa, Monday, 22 June 2009 05:40 (fourteen years ago) link

on tuesday i missed the garbage truck because i thought it would always come at 11 pm and it came at 7:30. so i had to keep my garbage inside until today and i had a lid on it so the flies were manageable but when i went to tie it up it was the WORST garbage i have ever smelled, it smelled like a baby's diaper x10000, i thought i would pass out, i was gagging, it was unbelievable. i did get it outside but now the smell is still lingering even though i sprayed the garbage can with lysol. UGH what an outrage

when i lived in japan i always knew when summer was at hand bcz our building's garbage would get the WORST fish stench. oh it'd get in my nose for hours, so awful

buttimore (jergins), Saturday, 27 June 2009 00:02 (fourteen years ago) link

Oh god the worst was living next to the live poultry store in bushwick my first summer in nyc. It was a hot one, with many 100 degree days, and with no a/c our options were a) stagnant 100 degree chicken air, or b)turn on fan & blow hot chicken breeze all over the room. On top of it, when the garbage truck came, the act of picking up the bags that had been cooking on the street all day and throwing them into the truck where they were mixed up with all the other hot trash would release this pugnant stench into the air that once woke me up and almost made me vomit it was so bad. What an outrage!

tehersa (tehresa), Saturday, 27 June 2009 00:31 (fourteen years ago) link

It still wouldn't smell as bad as poultry I imagine. Something about animal flesh is just so prone to rancid stenchiness. Also remember that it was a live poultry store, so you got the smell of animal waste, too.

lxy, Saturday, 27 June 2009 02:50 (fourteen years ago) link

(hi sandbox!)

Even after a good talking to and clear instructions on how a roomba would do it, the vacuum cleaner is still sitting forlornly out in the main room, just can't manage to put itself away in the closet.

(hi jaq!)

estela, Monday, 29 June 2009 06:12 (fourteen years ago) link

Hi Jaq!

Estela, I think you have a peeler problem. I will attempt to dream up a solution to this outrage.

Also reminds me: need to buy vacuum cleaner.

tehersa (tehresa), Monday, 29 June 2009 07:06 (fourteen years ago) link

maybe jaq's roomba can be programmed to roam over to your place occasionally. for that matter, maybe jaq's roomba can be programmed to roam over to MY place occasionally.

stela, maybe it would be more economical and less outrageous if you just bought the disposable peelers from now on.

lxy, Monday, 29 June 2009 15:04 (fourteen years ago) link

oh i thought it was just a normal vacuum and jaq was trying to shame it into roomba-like behavior by telling it all about how a roomba would go about cleaning the floors and then stowing itself neatly away.

Bride's bouquet crashes plane in Italy

July 15, 2009 - 6:47AM

ROME - A romantic wedding in the Tuscan countryside ended with injuries after an attempt to launch the bride's bouquet from a plane brought down the tiny aircraft.
Italian police say two people were hurt in the crash of the ultralight plane after the bridal bouquet they launched got caught in the aircraft's rear rotor.
The flowers blocked the engine, bringing the plane down by a youth hostel.
Police in the nearby town of Piombino said on Tuesday the pilot was lightly injured in Saturday's crash, while the passenger who threw the bouquet had several broken bones.
The bride and groom were not aboard the plane.

landlord late on trash bill; bags from all units piling up outside my back door for 2 1/2 weeks now. need to borrow boss's truck at lunch to pick them up and throw them away at work (not risking ruining new car's upholstery with weeks-old garbage bags).

estela, Wednesday, 15 July 2009 04:19 (fourteen years ago) link

another brownie outrage: gluten-free brownie mix makes a strange concoction that sticks to your pan and results in palm punctures when trying to use a knife to lever it out. oopsie.

unregistered, Friday, 24 July 2009 01:12 (fourteen years ago) link

er, minus the palm punctures, I mean. someone needs to buy you a tacky knife sharpener for your birthday imo, & you'll never have that problem again.

unregistered, Friday, 24 July 2009 01:13 (fourteen years ago) link

the batter seemed totally greasy! i thought it was gonna be a gross greasy glob that would slide right out of the pan.

the knife was plenty sharp... it's just that i accidentally jammed it point first into my palm in a badly coordinated attempt to loosen crap from the bottom of the pan.

te,he (tehresa), Friday, 24 July 2009 01:15 (fourteen years ago) link

i suppose that is why they make spatulas, but it just didn't seem appropriate.

te,he (tehresa), Friday, 24 July 2009 01:17 (fourteen years ago) link

spatulas as cutting instruments are bogus and totally unfulfilling, especially when they're made of that teflon-friendly silicone crap. what fun are cooking tools when they're not visceral and potentially deadly?

on second though someone should buy you one of these:

two weeks pass...

tried jaq's yeast and sugar concoction in the jarbl today. dumped some of each into warmish water, stirred, and lidded. after several hours there was only a very thin layer of foam, and no fruit flies. couple of more hours, two inches of foam and about 7 fruit flies roaming around on the underside of the lid, and one who was intrepidly tip-toeing along on top of the foam. i lolled very much before i swirled the jarbl and sunk all of them.

saturday in the car, on our way to the island, jergins and i lamented that we hadn't had time to clean up the kitchen before we left. "oh well," jergins said. "there's still monday." "i think we'll need to do a jarbl by then, too," i replied.

and then we congratulated ourselves and the sandbox for having a word for the fruit fly annihilator.

the landlord calls and says she needs to come over and check out a minor mold situation in our bedroom, but makes a point of telling us that it's not an Inspection Of The House, so we should just close the doors to any rooms we don't won't her looking in.

our bathroom is a disaster but i get home pretty late the night before so i figure fuckit i'll just close the door.

2 days later she calls to say that she had to use the bathroom to wash her hands (UM HELLO WE HAVE TAPS AND HAND SANITIZER IN THE KITCHEN) and she 'noticed' some 'issues'.

we accidentally discovered the perfect jarbl concoction this week: whiskey soda with lime and ice, half consumed and left on the counter amidst myriad other neglected drinking, dining, and cooking accoutrements, till it becomes opaque and develops a thickish skin. the friut flies just dive right in and pickle themselves, even without the trickery of t-cut cellophane.

disgusting but effective.

we wondered why the invasion had abated mid-season, despite the unwashedness of practically every dish in the house, when all the while the wee drunks were quietly drowning their sorrows in a forgotten cocktail hiding behind a stack of plates.

i'm experimenting with a jarbl variation which is really just some pancake syrup on a piece of waxed paper. jergins reports that we have one victim so far.

estèlauder (p much resigned to deems), Wednesday, 17 April 2013 02:17 (eleven years ago) link

okay it's not working. the victim has freed himself after gorging on syrup, and none of the others seem interested. just 6 ants wandering aimlessly around the countertop.

lxy, Wednesday, 17 April 2013 02:50 (eleven years ago) link

jergins swiped up the wanderers with a sponge, and the experiment has thusly concluded.

There are tiny ants in my office. I find them on the whiteboard during meetings. Its weird but they are mostly harmless. We have those liquid trap things that worked ok last year but not so much yet this year.

tehresa, Wednesday, 17 April 2013 11:43 (eleven years ago) link

they sound cunning, i wouldn't relax if i were you.

estela, Wednesday, 17 April 2013 12:59 (eleven years ago) link

i had them in another apt and used traps that were like little homes they would crawl into to get poisoned before crawling away to die somewhere. they worked pretty good.

i might have needed a 15% car insurance discount because--and this is a domestic outrage on a giant grand scale--i was driving home from the grocery store a couple of nights ago when i realised a very large spider was in my car, on the the windscreen, moving towards my bare arm. it's something i've always dreaded might happen ever since i moved to australia because the spiders here are horrendous and sneaky and i always fretted i could not guarantee my driving behaviour if it did. however i stayed calm, pulled over, got out of the car very swiftly, whipped off my shoe and leaned in and whacked it. and when i got home i emptied a can of bug spray into the car and then left it closed up for 24 hours. and then today i sprayed inside the car some more with a new can of bug spray and then i closed it up again for an hour and then i drove it with trepidation but without incident.

The weirdest thing is that no one beyond my neighborhood experienced anything remotely like we did! two weeks pass...

working on some (one) home projects this week. which mostly means looking at people's dumb blogs about how to hang shelves and make furniture. i need to totally redo my kitchen but don't have money, which has led to me procrastinating with even the small project of putting up shelves in this useless corner of my kitchen so i can get things out of the way. because why put up shelves when i'm going to redo it...in 5 years. i got some plywood and track shelving and just did it yesterday. it doesn't look too pretty but there's finally nothing on the floor! the outrageous part of this is how bad i am at drilling screws into wood. i'm gonna need some new drill bits as i am ruining mine by drilling incorrectly. i finished the screws with a screwdriver.

spite n ease (harbl), Saturday, 16 July 2016 21:37 (seven years ago) link

so pleased to report the fly population in my kitchen has taken a huge dive. the offending garbage can seems to have left the area, too, so i don't know what caused it. i didn't look at the trap to see if i really caught any. i feel superstitious about it.

spite n ease (harbl), Sunday, 17 July 2016 23:49 (seven years ago) link

nm i just looked and there are NO flies in the trap. i can't believe all that was caused by a single uncovered trash can. like i literally vacuumed up 1000 flies. or it was something in my own walls and they ran out of food. i don't know. fuck.

spite n ease (harbl), Monday, 18 July 2016 00:12 (seven years ago) link

maybe they just got born nearby and were sticking close to home till they were better at being flies. and now they've moved away from home to start their own families?

lxy, Monday, 18 July 2016 17:24 (seven years ago) link

there's one room in one of the residence halls on my campus that every year for decades has been the site of an annual ladybug outbreak. they're only there for a few days and then they go away. but

1. a lot of them die there
2. too much of anything is freaky, not matter how cute or benign
3. infant ladybugs are very very ugly and gross

so every year the students assigned to that room freak the fuck out but of course no one will do anything because, ladybugs.

lxy, Monday, 18 July 2016 17:31 (seven years ago) link

ladybugs smell kind of bad, too

flies are not totally gone but slowed. but based on what i know about population models that doesn't mean the battle is over. my kitchen also has ants. every spring i put out one of those baits that they carry back to the nest, poisoning all the ants. it doesn't seem to have worked this year. i put out another one. one thing i am enjoying is i watched them totally clean a dead fly off the ground little by little. it was very entertaining.

spite n ease (harbl), Monday, 18 July 2016 22:55 (seven years ago) link

Are they ladybugs or Asian lady beetles? I learned last fall that the latter are prominent here...my front porch looked like a plague was upon my house. I also went to a cemetery walk that weekend and everyone spent the whole time swatting them away/off their persons which was pretty creepy.

toadstool might (tehresa), Monday, 18 July 2016 23:13 (seven years ago) link

it is mandatory here. however, it wasn't picked up again this week. outrageous, again.

that was weird. did the electricians come and not hear it so they just left?

lxy, Friday, 14 October 2016 16:47 (seven years ago) link

it actually happened again in the wall by the stove and the only way i could get it to stop was to turn the breaker off. when the electrician came we turned it back on and no noise! he said he can't diagnose without hearing it or tearing the wall open so call him when/if it happens again.

a bad little bush turkey has moved into our street and keeps digging up people's plants with it's long toes and about once a day it crosses our yard and comes right up to the sliding door and peers into our living room and does an expressionless little throat gobble and then wanders off again. it's quite skinny and short so you can't easily see it when it's behind a plant. i hope it stays, i love it, but the fusspots with the dead plants want it to clear off.

toadstool might (tehresa), Saturday, 12 November 2016 04:24 (seven years ago) link

imo the political is always personal and your political beliefs are most certainly a reflection of who you are as a person. not to say that being a lefty automatically makes you a good person, but all right-wing policies seem to spring from hatred of some sort, from negativity and oppression of one or more groups.

trump is so clearly and transparently awful, insincere and corrupt, that if someone is claiming hillary is worse, then i know they're really just bigoted and emails/benghazi/clinton foundation stuff is just a convenient cover for that.

no one needs to be around toxic people, and people on the right are straight-up poison.

i had this a couple years ago and it was outrageous but also really impressive (and horrifying) -- there was a single line of them coming in the window at the other end of the apartment, traversing the length of it in straight lines, and climbing up a wall to a bottle of honey in the cupboard

we're contracted for quarterly (supposedly eco) spraying because of the outrageousness of the sugar ants. the guy said they come in looking for water (but apparently they stay for the crumbs). he also said they're called sugar ants because they smell sweet if you squash them, which he then demonstrated by squashing one and smelling it, then holding it out for me to smell, to which i was like HELL NO I AM NOT SMELLING YOUR FRESHLY DEAD ANT JESUS CHRIST DUDE MOVE YOUR HAND AWAY FROM MY FACE.

anyway, they still come in occasionally but not like they used to.

estela, Sunday, 1 March 2020 19:20 (four years ago) link

i am outraged that, while in-person classes at my university have been suspended through the end of the month, offices will remain open. so, those of us who are in higher-risk age brackets will continue to throw ourselves out into the great world of disease every day, while the people in the less-at-risk age brackets can stay home and away from potential contact at every turn.

the announcement of the above arrived first thing this morning, followed shortly by an announcement that a staff person working in a building up the street has tested presumptive-positive, their building has been closed, and all people who've been in contact with them should self-isolate for 14 days. but yay, let's all the rest of us keep going to germ land all the time.

lxy, Friday, 6 March 2020 16:39 (four years ago) link

i feel strongly that there's a domestic connection to my outrage, but i'm too outraged to quite get at it.

lxy, Friday, 6 March 2020 16:40 (four years ago) link

this is exactly the kind of thing my employer does. typically it is weather-related and classes are canceled for students, 95% of whom live on campus. meanwhile offices remain open and staff, who have to drive in, are told to report. indeed an outrage. (of the domestic capitalism sort?)

toadstool might (tehresa), Friday, 6 March 2020 21:23 (four years ago) link

i am in a more fortunate place now, but i am reminded that k-12 i had exactly two school days cancelled for weather. one was because the boilers had failed; the other was because the buses couldn't climb the hill due to ice

despite the latter, we still had basketball practice

mookieproof, Saturday, 7 March 2020 05:47 (four years ago) link

my hr department now says that we can't work remotely, despite the fact that all students have been told they have to leave campus by sunday at 3 pm. outraged is too mild a term for how i feel right now.

speaking on both mrs mac and laundry in the other thread, she left what appears to have been several thousand euro worth of loo roll in her jeans when putting them in the basket the last day and was outrageously obvious about not thinking it was *that* big a deal when it destroyed the 40 degree dark wash

she says it served me right for throwing the teabags in the bin from across the kitchen and always splashing the wall (the walls are her job) but it's clearly not comparable imco

esperantzen (p much resigned to deems), Sunday, 22 March 2020 00:59 (four years ago) link

the main light fixture in my kitchen isn’t working. whether this is due to dumb wiring on the part of the previous owners, or bad wiring choices on the part of the current owner who is currently isolated in the house is yet to be determined
