The new I LOVE X is ready.

A bit earlier than planned, here's nuILX.

You'll have to register again to post. Some things are different, including the links at the top of the page. Some things are new, like Poll threads. Some things are completely gone, like Blog view and Trackbacks.

Some things are completely unchanged, like the Question/Answer format, and calls to ban Louis Jagger.

Because this is being run earlier than we expected, there may be some kinks, and some stuff might not work as you expect. There's also a need for polish in places (like the stylesheet!). But until we can see how well the basic stuff holds up, the code will be frozen. Give it time!

For the next few hours, the front door will still be shut to googlers and co. Get to the site
at http://www.ilxor.com:8080/ILX/

Discuss this on the new thread at:

no. bring back nothing. it honest to god is barely even readable with the style sheet turned on, if you disable it, as Ms Misery suggested, it's practically A-OK all around.

but I don't want to have to turn CSS on and off and on and off to use ILX and the rest of the internet. just get rid of the stylesheet altogether.

It's more secure from Jon, which means I don't have to run around fixing old holes in code that he's "helpfully" pointing out. It also won't take up 100% of the processor power on the one small server we have, so we won't be back at the poxy fule every 4pm we had late last year. The ilx sandbox is none of these things.

UH, no, you paypalled it so we could buy a server after Andrew took his old one away. The amount of cash that was left over after that was a negative sum, so all the code and work is for free.

The old code could have stayed up for a bit longer, as the new server had plenty of headroom. But Jon fucked about with its many security holes, so we moved to the new more secure code, like he was obviously demanding.

this board is full of whiners

max (maxreax), Wednesday, 21 February 2007 20:07 (seventeen years ago) link

in the meantime i will produce a serious magick greasemonkey thing for this but i need only ONE (one) feature request—allow new answers and actual thread pages to display post times and dates as absolutes (or even absolutes relative to current user time) as opposed to relative (i.e. "2 minutes ago"). Alternately, I note that msgs in each thread are given a messageid relative just to that thread — plz to also display (in a hidden html element even, like, uh, a hidden form element maybe, or in the "name" attribute of the anchor links) in the new answers page, the msg id of the last post in each thread.

Should be relatively low overhead and it will let me script up a quick user-side "unread answers" functionality (which will be coupled with user-side "#unread" functionality too!)

Nu-Edward III (edward iii), Wednesday, 21 February 2007 20:31 (seventeen years ago) link

My main problem with nu-ILX is that everything is too spaced out. You can only see like 10 threads on New Answers at a time because there's a bunch of space between each one. And then within the thread, there's too much space above and below the horizontal line between each post (the line itself is too long, besides). I'm trying not to complain just because it's different, but it has the effect of making my eyes hurt, for real. I guess I just don't understand why it can't look exactly like ILX used to look. At this point, there are no significant advantages that nu-ILX has that would make me want to abandon the sandbox.

John, JW's hacks were way down the line of reasons ILX had to go! Crikey, we've only been talking about it for years, what with all the poxy fuling of yore and the break-downs and the times when everything would just be haywire. The original code was never meant to do what it does now, and it'll always break sooner or later under stress. THAT'S why it's been remade.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Wednesday, 21 February 2007 21:01 (seventeen years ago) link

But so did Old ILX and so does Sandbox ILX. What kind of functionality are we supposed to be impressed by?

That's not true. Old ILX was bust to fuck. Before we left Australia, it was poxy fuled almost every day, purely because of the load. The new server bought us some time, but even then within about a month it was hitting the limits and timing out. I raised the limits twice, and it still kept growing. By June, I estimate, it would have been dead in the water again.

Sandbox ILX works because it has virtually no threads.

Both have huge security holes, which drives Jon crazy with temptation.

Appearance: the new stylesheet will slowly move closer to how ILX looks right now, I promise. But using stylesheets lets us have a preference for how you want ILX to look, so people who want old-school work-safe can have that, and someone who wants prettier versions or a version tailored for blackberries/phones can have them too.

Not to get all Tuomas, but I don't know what a stylesheet is -- are you saying Nu-ILX has them and Old-ILX didn't?

Yes: old ILX hard-codes what it looks like, so it's difficult to change. New ILX can have a zillion different appearances. The one that's there just now is NOT FINAL.

close, they are separate. pages in old ilx are built by php, nuilx, by java. they will be rendered differently and the onion-skin layer of presentation isn't an issue (nor should it really be) at this stage when the code and db elements are getting worked out. also stet has spoke to some of this on the thread on nu board.

No worky on my cell phone, unfortunately. Don't know if this has been mentioned on this thread (can't read more than about 35 replies, and certainly not when people post pictures, internal memory too small), but I can register (can't select my time zone because there are like eight hundred of them and the page stops at the tenth Argentina one), but when I then try to log in it first warns that my password is being sent to another server and then "invalid web address" and (retry) "page not found". Will try again tomorrow at work (only have internet on my phone at home at the moment, just moved, won't have cable until the end of the month). Other than that, everything looks fine!

But using stylesheets lets us have a preference for how you want ILX to look, so people who want old-school work-safe can have that, and someone who wants prettier versions or a version tailored for blackberries/phones can have them too.

OMG does that mean I get to use AVATARS NOWWWW??

I'd still like someone to confirm that the reason why a work-in-progress was unveiled to the public was so that it could be test-driven. Because as it stands, I don't like the fact that half of ILX is on Nu-ILX and the other half is still on the Sandbox. I wish it had been more like, "Hey guys, test this out for a day or two, let us know what works and what doesn't, then we'll figure out how to fix it so that everyone's happy, and then later we'll unveil the whole thing as Shiny Nu-ILX."

Because Jon left us no choice? He unilaterally started fucking with the old, busted code (to tell us it was old and busted, apparently). We had to take it down, because it seriously shouldn't be up if people are going to hack at it, it's way too vulnerable and I'm not having our sole server get pwnd because of some 1990s-era PHP vulnerability.

At that point, there were two options: a pile of pointless work on the old code to secure it, or a hasty slap on the new code's ass, which needed stress-testing anyway. (Or leaving ILX down for months again, which I really didn't want to do.)

When we say it's "in progress", that's a general it-will-be-improved note, not a "we're actively still adding features right now, tonight". We need to first make sure the hugely-complicated cache works properly (it seems to be) and then think about where to take it next.

I don't like the fact that half of ILX is here either. This was never meant to be a permanent site, and it won't be. I'd be taking it down soon anyway, apart from the very real problem of people who plain can't get to the new site.

1. I know. I welcome all attempts to help!
2. There's a balance here between server-killing super-search and hard-to-find little search. Still it's better than what we've had all year, which was no search at all!
3. Not gonna happen
4. Maybe in future, yeh.
5. This is a per-user thing, and that's bad voodoo for the cache system, which is where the speed comes from
6. See above. I could make something static, I suppose.
7. Actually, incredibly resource-intensive. Used to kill old server, even after turbo button pushed.
8. Yeh, I know. It's a per-user thing too though (see above). A default set like ILE/ILM should probably be put there. For the rest, browser bookmarks will have to do in the short term.

I am liking the speed, tho.

PEOPLE WITH TROUBLE EVEN GETTING TO THE SITE
We know why this is, and will fix it over the weekend.

that's great news.

fwiw, i access ILX from three computers. I dont know if this will be any help or not but:

Computer A: Laptop. Primary computer. Can not access nu-ILX when connected through my office network but can access nu-ILX when on wifi at home. This computer lets me go ANYWHERE on the internet. It is a work computer but I am usually not blocked from anything. I have tried with firewalls both off and on.

Computer B: Desktop at work. I use this computer less than 5% of the time. It is on a completeley different network than computer A. I am in Hawaii but my IP shows up on the mainland. This computer wont let me go anywhere near myspace, youtube, pr0n, etc. I CAN access nu-ILX on this computer.

Computer C: GF's laptop on wifi at home. Can access Nu-ILX.

i have registered and changed my password and succesfully posted.

as far as design, just make the WELCOME TO I LOVE EVERYTHING smaller, for starters.

also, tracer OTM wrt how much faster everything loads. i think sacrificing trackbacks and personal settings and search functions and stats is worth a faster board and no poxy fules. not having the LATER function is a major bummer though. but a faster board will come in handy when ILX is doing a 900 post thread on the red carpet at the oscars on monday morning.

stet: thanks for all the hard work you put into this. seriously, knowing that Andrew basically washed his hands of this place makes me realize what a pain it must be keeping it going. I think jaymc is right that you didnt really "unveil" nu-ILX in the most thought-out way but you dont deserve all the fuck-you's you're getting. part of the reson we like ILX is because it runs on home-made code and not some shitty looking stock bbs with colors and avatars and only seven posts per page. i know nothing about web design but i do know that.

Check your hotmail spam folder. Fact checking cuz had a similar problem last night; when he double checked said folder the password mail was there.

hey this is a petty question, but what of moderator powers on the sub-boards? i am too lazy to reread, i remember there was noise about the fact that mods hadn't really been fully installed at that point, i was just wondering if/when that would go back into place as well (if there is an ETA).
