what do u know about letterpress printing? ari is interested in it & i was thinking of getting her one of these cheap-ish ~$200 tabletop presses they seem to always have on ebay as a bday present... dunno if the quality is good enough? or how hard it is to cut & make ur own plates? any thoughts or is this outside yr area of expertise

max max max max, Sunday, 7 June 2009 20:38 (fifteen years ago) link

i want one too max

trouble child (harbl), Sunday, 7 June 2009 20:54 (fifteen years ago) link

max: i'm not really much of an expert on letterpress, not on the equipment side anyways. but a table top press is a good start for someone new to printing. the problem is you kind of need a lot of stuff to go along with it and you need a lot of space - does she want to do images or text or both? you can pick up type cases from junkyards sometimes for cheap, but they're really heavy and often missing a lot of letters. then you need frames and quoins and furniture, rollers and inks and spacers and composing sticks. to make your own plates you need to know how to make photo polymer plates (although i guess she could make wood cuts too, although i'm not really sure how difficult this). how much experience does she have with letterpress? if she doesn't have much, instead of buying her an actual press i would suggest offering to buy her classes where she could learn how to make plates or get more experience printing. are you in NY? in san francisco there is a place called the Centre for the Book, and after you've taken their beginner and intermediate classes you can hire their presses and have access to all their equipment for pretty cheap. there's probably something similar where you live. it's just really expensive to get started doing this otherwise, and this way she can learn heaps before making the commitment to buying her own stuff.

i don't really know much about the presses themselves, so i couldn't tell you if any of the ones on ebay are any good.

i actually said 'giant mcguffins' but let's not quibble.

estela, Monday, 8 June 2009 02:33 (fifteen years ago) link

anyway thank you--i sort of imagined that a class was a better way to go about it but i was hoping it would be easier to just buy a press since its always nicer to have a physical gift to give! she has no experience with letterpress; shes a part-time designer and i think she wants to expand and start making her own business & greeting cards and stuff, not on any kind of serious or large scale but just as a hobby, & she loves the look & feel of letterpress-printed material. i think the equivalent of the thing yr talking about is a place called the arm in NYC or at least its the hipster letterpress place... does $125 daylong workshop + $15/hr rental seem right? thank u again for yr help!

max max max max, Monday, 8 June 2009 02:42 (fifteen years ago) link

$125 for a day long class sounds good - here's the equivalent class at SFCB: http://sfcb.org/php/classes.php?id=T2-060509-PRT also, i think $12-15 p/hr is pretty standard, depending on how much equipment they have.

what about: buy her the class (like, make a fake certificate saying you'll pay for it) and as a physical gift buy her some really nice fabriano paper or cardstock (or some other high quality paper) she can print on?

a press is a big expense, like i said - the press itself is merely the beginning, and she won't be able to do anything with it till she knows how to use it correctly and has all the equipment. the classes will give her a grounding to decide if it's worth the investment. lino-cuts are also something she should look into - it'll give her more freedom to actually create a design block to print with and they're pretty easy to make, i think.

estela: i was trying to be a little euphemistic in my paraphrasing

smoove operator, Monday, 8 June 2009 02:46 (fifteen years ago) link

maybe i was talking about lxy's sizable plot elements and you misunderstood me.

estela, Monday, 8 June 2009 02:51 (fifteen years ago) link

wtf is goin on in this thread

jergins, Monday, 8 June 2009 02:52 (fifteen years ago) link

yeah i know shes done linocuts before--i think what shes interested in w/ letterpess is the texture u can achieve. but i shouldnt speak for her. thanks 4 the advice i will let u know how it goes--maybe we will send u a card in the mail

max max max max, Monday, 8 June 2009 02:52 (fifteen years ago) link

hey jergs were just talkin about printing presses and lxys plot elements what caught her viewers attentions

max max max max, Monday, 8 June 2009 02:53 (fifteen years ago) link

lino cuts can be run through a letterpress - it's the rolling of the press that forces the impression on the paper, and it also depends on the type of paper you use (it's thickness and softness)

smoove operator, Monday, 8 June 2009 02:56 (fifteen years ago) link

see u are a letterpress expert!!!
