Let's all anticipate my losing the use of my left arm

A gruesome home accident, caused by a series of completely unpredictable Thomas Hardyesque coincidences, has left me without the use of my left arm and left hand for the next few months, or possibly longer.

I've never broken/damaged anything before: any advice on daily activity, or how not to drive your partner crazy, and any other general up-pecker keeping would be much appreciated.

Also, drinkable morphine.

could you turn it into a gun arm?

I'm glad to hear it's obly temporary. Reading the thread title, I thought you were having it amputated. Still, sounds like a long time. Are you going to be in a cast the whole time? Might be fun to screw some hooks into it and make yourself a key rack or something.

Plus, you can't really drop "grusome home accident caused by a series of completely unpredictable etc. etc." and not give the details. Do a public service and let us know how NOT to end up this way.

It actually WAS pretty gruesome so feel free to look away and ignore, but here goes --

If I can say this in a vague way (it's still weird to think about, as it only happened this week) -- I slipped over and put my hand through a glass window -- and severed some joints in my arm, which had to be sewn back. Was a bit of a gusher.

The doctor ensured me it will all heal, but it'll take some time. And I'll have a nice suicide-y looking wrist scar.

Fortunately (so to speak) am right handed.

drinkable morphine pretty much guaranteed to keep you on the seat of ease for hours, straining until you get a hernia.

I have done that very thing!

I was three or thereabouts, and put my hand through a plate glass window panel that was in the door to my bedroom, at my grandmas in South Shields. The light was off and I didn't know the door was closed.

Fortunately my hand/arm got no injury but my chin got slashed. I went to hospital for stitches. Still have a bit of a scar there.

they should just make all glass windows out of the candy glass they use in movies

but then when it rains...

Voice recognition software, like Dragon maybe, for computering?

Sandbox James Morrison, Wednesday, 7 December 2011 23:49 (twelve years ago) link

Looks that way! Apparently recovery time is three months best case. I've had bad experiences with Dragon before (after an RSI bout in 2002), have you tried it?

Otherwise I'm mending slowly, though trying to peel a banana with one hand is a heartbreaker. I butter toast by thwacking the knife up and down like a hammer, which is funnier and therefore less sad.

My wife uses Dragon all the time, and it's fine for her, but I do know other people have problems. She doesn't have a strong (Australian, in our case) accent, though.
