Yep, it was back long enough for me to see the front page.

stet (stet), Monday, 14 August 2006 15:01 (eighteen years ago) link

Hey. I guess that means someone's working on it, then?

Mark C, Monday, 14 August 2006 15:04 (eighteen years ago) link

I don't know -- there's been no noises from anyone I've heard. Perhaps it's just dying, not completely dead.

stet (stet), Monday, 14 August 2006 15:10 (eighteen years ago) link

fuck.

the artist formerly known as grimly fiendish, Monday, 14 August 2006 15:22 (eighteen years ago) link

Is that your contribution?

Madchen (Madchen), Monday, 14 August 2006 15:28 (eighteen years ago) link

Real ILX has been down so long that this place has replaced it in my URL autocomplete box. :(

stet (stet), Monday, 14 August 2006 15:31 (eighteen years ago) link

Is that your contribution?

yup. sadly, i can think of nothing more useful.

gf, Monday, 14 August 2006 15:50 (eighteen years ago) link

Maybe Andrew is seeing how many emails he gets as a test of our ILXLove?

stet (stet), Monday, 14 August 2006 16:20 (eighteen years ago) link

Ha! This place is up for less than a day before it gets poxy fuled itself

stet (stet), Monday, 14 August 2006 21:35 (eighteen years ago) link

It has replaced my autocomplete thingy too.

Madchen (Madchen), Tuesday, 15 August 2006 07:59 (eighteen years ago) link

As soon as I saw ilxor in the Observer I thought it would be bad news but I didn't realise it would have this impact - newspapers! who'd a thought?

Having said that I was getting poxy fuled more often recently anyway.

we missed out on such a big opportunity. if we made the NUILX donations like a big thing on the front page, and made it to cost £5 per registration JUST BEFORE the observer article, we can probably afford to run ilx on a dedicated OC192 line.

ken c, Tuesday, 15 August 2006 13:49 (eighteen years ago) link

I don't understand how the Observer thing can have such a detrimental effect. On Sunday and Monday maybe when there's a spike of interest but usually these things tail off pretty quickly and more so when you can't access the board.

Billy Dods (Billy Dods), Tuesday, 15 August 2006 13:56 (eighteen years ago) link

Some of us have been posting on LAST FM while ILX is down.

pfunkboy (Kerr), Tuesday, 15 August 2006 13:57 (eighteen years ago) link

This looks much nicer.

I screwded up my first registration, so now I'm called M for some reason.

M Grout (Mark Grout), Tuesday, 15 August 2006 14:00 (eighteen years ago) link

Hi M. I'm C.

C J, Tuesday, 15 August 2006 14:02 (eighteen years ago) link

Whee! I'm in, it seems to work!

I didn't think anyone read OMM, anyway. Perhaps pulling the site down is their revenge for all the snark martian and Marcello tossed their way over the last few years?

Norman Phay (Pashmina), Tuesday, 15 August 2006 14:05 (eighteen years ago) link

right who's going to start the first evah THEHOLD-ILX FEUD with me??

ken c, Tuesday, 15 August 2006 14:08 (eighteen years ago) link

Madchen (Madchen), Tuesday, 15 August 2006 14:11 (eighteen years ago) link

Ken won't have long to wait then.

pfunkboy (Kerr), Tuesday, 15 August 2006 14:15 (eighteen years ago) link

is the observer mention online? i can't see it on their webpage...

toby (tsg20), Tuesday, 15 August 2006 15:26 (eighteen years ago) link

Apparently it's only in the print version? I didn't buy a copy yesterday, so I don't know for sure.

Norman Phay (Pashmina), Tuesday, 15 August 2006 15:28 (eighteen years ago) link

It's in the review section. It's a tiny single line mention in a sidebar. NO KITTY chooses her top five music sites. ILX is the first.

I find it a bit hard to believe that it was enough to cause an outage, really. But who knows.

JimD, Tuesday, 15 August 2006 15:30 (eighteen years ago) link

Yeah, it seems pretty weird to me, even if they'd done a big feature on it, bigger publications than OMM have covered ILX more prominently without it pulling the site down.

I Am Curious (George) (Slight Return) (Rock Hardy), Tuesday, 15 August 2006 15:36 (eighteen years ago) link

Didn't Ned's infro from Andrew say that it was a lot of hits from a specific UK referrer which caused ilx to fall over? Cos if the Observer piece didn't even include the ilx mention in its online version (and it didn't, it's here), then that's enough to disprove that theory, really.

JimD, Tuesday, 15 August 2006 15:37 (eighteen years ago) link

maybe dissensus is performing a denial of service attack?

lf, Tuesday, 15 August 2006 15:48 (eighteen years ago) link

HI DERE.

So anyway. I have no idea what's going on beyond what I've been forwarding to all and sundry what I hear from everyone else. Though it has been amusing to note that apparently I *am* ILX in some eyes.

The whole referral question is pretty strange. Surely it would have topped out by now.

works fine for me in here, too. What do we have to do to stress-test this thing? how hard does it have to be hit before it poxy-fules?
-- kingfish in absentia (jdsalmo...) (webmail), August 15th, 2006 4:50 PM. (later)

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Woah! Don't stress-test it yet! It'll definitely break, as it's on a shared server. It's just to fill the database with a reasonable amount of stuff so code tests have some connnection to the real world.
-- stet (bonald...) (webmail), August 15th, 2006 4:51 PM. (later)

Maybe linking from outside isn't the best idea just yet?

ailsa_xx (ailsa_xx), Tuesday, 15 August 2006 16:00 (eighteen years ago) link

Ah, that would do. Hold on. *edits*

Ned Raggett (Ned), Tuesday, 15 August 2006 16:03 (eighteen years ago) link

I don't believe it's only because of that newspaper thing either. This kind of "no reply from server" was happening now and then (a couple of times during the last couple of weeks - remember the previous weekend's "we're back" ?) besides the poxy fuling.

StanM (StanM), Tuesday, 15 August 2006 16:03 (eighteen years ago) link

That hadn't been happening to me at all. I was just getting poxy fuled a lot. Like, loads.

trees (trees), Tuesday, 15 August 2006 16:04 (eighteen years ago) link

Granted, but Andrew's brief message to me was clear enough:

> Nope, not been pulled. Just there was an article in the Guardian (I

So there you go.

I mean, keep in mind Andrew may be getting odd info there himself. But he's there keeping an eye on the server and presumably knows where the traffic is coming from. *shrug*

Ned Raggett (Ned), Tuesday, 15 August 2006 16:09 (eighteen years ago) link

The Boserver sells 457,000. If every single one of them tried to load ILX that'd be 10 times the average load. But still ...

stet (stet), Tuesday, 15 August 2006 16:21 (eighteen years ago) link

Have we at least put links in every other boards so that the ilx diaspora knows to migrate here?

As has been told to you before.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Tuesday, 15 August 2006 16:28 (eighteen years ago) link

I'm OTM there. The hold can probably take a bit moer than it has now, right enough, so letting forlorn lost ilxors know should be OK.

I wouldn't open the wikipedia/world announcement floodgates though. After all, the real ILX surely can't be down for much longer, can it?

stet (stet), Tuesday, 15 August 2006 16:30 (eighteen years ago) link

No idea.

Mrs. RH mail-orders all year "for christmas," gives the gifts as soon as they arrive, then buys more when it's actually christmas. She's going to fucking ruin me.

I Am Curious (George) (Slight Return) (Rock Hardy), Thursday, 31 August 2006 14:58 (eighteen years ago) link

Might be a problem with Linux file size limit?

It's unlikely - the main file size problem hits at 2G, and I'd have thought that if ILX is approaching 4G the largest table would already have passed the 2G point.

In any case, few systems still have the 2G limit.

This year, I will FINISH and actually GIVE the Xmas CD I have dedicated the last weeks before Xmas to for the past 2 years to recording. The "won't get mad at christmas" song. The lo-fi disco "joy to the world". The soft pretty one that will probably make my mom cry. Etc. SEE, I'M NOT A TOTAL FAILURE. MERRY XMAS, MOMS.

Currently the DB (MySQL on Linux) is in itself apparently broken -- from the outside it appears it is not responding correctly to updates, inserts or selects.

Has something happened to the permissions for the database user? Is there a size limit on the share where the db is?

I am in awe of people using this time to make xmas gifts! I've just been filling time with more cups of tea.

jaq (jaq), Thursday, 31 August 2006 20:02 (eighteen years ago) link

It looks as if some checks that were run yesterday (which should have been completely safe) sent it haywire. Then the searches to refill New Answers compounded things.

Just now best opinion is that it won't work until somebody with server access restarts the DB server.
