yeah, sounds like it must be something else causing the problem, then...

maybe dissensus is performing a denial of service attack?

lf, Tuesday, 15 August 2006 15:48 (eighteen years ago) link

HI DERE.

So anyway. I have no idea what's going on beyond what I've been forwarding to all and sundry what I hear from everyone else. Though it has been amusing to note that apparently I *am* ILX in some eyes.

The whole referral question is pretty strange. Surely it would have topped out by now.

Haha, the dissensus floodbot that sticks in a 1,000,000 word post about grime in 2006 whenever is sees an open comment box.

Norman Phay (Pashmina), Tuesday, 15 August 2006 15:52 (eighteen years ago) link

Okay, I updated the Wikipedia entry with a link here, at least.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Tuesday, 15 August 2006 15:57 (eighteen years ago) link

From http://ilx.thehold.net/thread.php?msgid=41#unread

works fine for me in here, too. What do we have to do to stress-test this thing? how hard does it have to be hit before it poxy-fules?
-- kingfish in absentia (jdsalmo...) (webmail), August 15th, 2006 4:50 PM. (later)

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Woah! Don't stress-test it yet! It'll definitely break, as it's on a shared server. It's just to fill the database with a reasonable amount of stuff so code tests have some connnection to the real world.
-- stet (bonald...) (webmail), August 15th, 2006 4:51 PM. (later)

Maybe linking from outside isn't the best idea just yet?

ailsa_xx (ailsa_xx), Tuesday, 15 August 2006 16:00 (eighteen years ago) link

Ah, that would do. Hold on. *edits*

Ned Raggett (Ned), Tuesday, 15 August 2006 16:03 (eighteen years ago) link

I don't believe it's only because of that newspaper thing either. This kind of "no reply from server" was happening now and then (a couple of times during the last couple of weeks - remember the previous weekend's "we're back" ?) besides the poxy fuling.

StanM (StanM), Tuesday, 15 August 2006 16:03 (eighteen years ago) link

That hadn't been happening to me at all. I was just getting poxy fuled a lot. Like, loads.

trees (trees), Tuesday, 15 August 2006 16:04 (eighteen years ago) link

Granted, but Andrew's brief message to me was clear enough:

> Nope, not been pulled. Just there was an article in the Guardian (I
> think) which linked to ILX. The server is being bombarded. :(
>
> Andrew

So there you go.

I mean, keep in mind Andrew may be getting odd info there himself. But he's there keeping an eye on the server and presumably knows where the traffic is coming from. *shrug*

Ned Raggett (Ned), Tuesday, 15 August 2006 16:09 (eighteen years ago) link

The Boserver sells 457,000. If every single one of them tried to load ILX that'd be 10 times the average load. But still ...

stet (stet), Tuesday, 15 August 2006 16:21 (eighteen years ago) link

Have we at least put links in every other boards so that the ilx diaspora knows to migrate here?

As has been told to you before.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Tuesday, 15 August 2006 16:28 (eighteen years ago) link

I'm OTM there. The hold can probably take a bit moer than it has now, right enough, so letting forlorn lost ilxors know should be OK.

I wouldn't open the wikipedia/world announcement floodgates though. After all, the real ILX surely can't be down for much longer, can it?

stet (stet), Tuesday, 15 August 2006 16:30 (eighteen years ago) link

No idea.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Tuesday, 15 August 2006 16:31 (eighteen years ago) link

I'm not counting on seeing the old database again until it's running on new code.

I Am Curious (George) (Slight Return) (Rock Hardy), Tuesday, 15 August 2006 16:40 (eighteen years ago) link

sad thing is first thing i did when i realized ilx was beyond poxy fuled was peep raggett's myspace profile for news.

could this end up being the permanent ilx home? where is this being hosted? am i missing an explanation somewhere upthread that i'm too lazy to read?

bohren un der club of gear, Tuesday, 15 August 2006 16:51 (eighteen years ago) link

No, this is a temporary test site on a shared host. The permanent home will be elsewhere -- but this is good for testing out new code in the interim.

No, on my crappy shared space server, probably.

I put this up last week to test out code changes/rewrites for the nuILX project that's starting up. Then ILX died, and I asked for some test posts so there was actually something here to work on. then loads of people turned up!

It should be quick. ILX has 4 million posts. This has 400. :D

stet (stet), Tuesday, 15 August 2006 16:57 (eighteen years ago) link

nu-nu-ILX, 1 million posts by Saturday.

Actually I was catching up at the fracturing despair over on the right these days that just maybe they were wrong about what a good idea Iraq was. I'd be gleefully entertained were it not for all the misery and death.

From the Red State piece:
"It does us very little good to coddle or otherwise allow people like Moqtada Al Sadr to be coddled."

I love it when forward leaning tuff guys use idiomatic language with abandon. It's time to stop coddling and take the gloves off! The Sunnis keep moving their leg onto the Shiite's side of the seat, so we may be forced to pull over the car. No more coddling.

Floofer Barrrrrr (Fluffy Bear Hearts Rainbows), Tuesday, 15 August 2006 19:35 (eighteen years ago) link

You know, the observer article didn't even give a link, it just named "ilxor" as the site. For people to find it though that, they'd need to google first. So unless all the traffic is coming from search engine referrals, I really don't think it can be related to the Observer.

JimD, Tuesday, 15 August 2006 19:36 (eighteen years ago) link
